Supported Applications
The Omega FOS-Series Fiber Optic Temperature Sensors are designed for temperature measurement in environments where immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and microwave radiation is required. The series utilizes light transmission through fiber optic cables rather than resistance or voltage, providing reliable signal transfer without degradation due to cable length.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The FOS-Series operates within a process temperature range of -200°C to 250°C (-328°F to 482°F). The sensors deliver an accuracy of ±0.8°C (1.8°F) with a repeatability of 0.2°C in relative temperature measurements. Response time is up to 200 ms.
Key performance characteristics include:
- Process Temperature Range: -200 to 250°C (-328 to 482°F)
- Accuracy: ±0.8°C (1.8°F)
- Repeatability: 0.2°C
- Response Time: Up to 200 ms
- Sensor Diameter: 1.6 mm (1/16")
The sensors do not require recalibration and maintain high stability over time.
Configuration Options
The series is available in two primary configurations distinguished by the sensor tip coating material:
- FOS-LT-* Models: Feature a PTFE coated fiber optic sensor. Available lengths include 2, 3, 5, and 10 meters (e.g., FOS-LT-5).
- FOS-LU-* Models: Feature a more durable polyimide material coating on the sensor tip. Available in matching length options.
All models utilize an ST Connector for electrical connection and are constructed with PTFE cable materials or Polyimide wetted parts depending on the model series. Cable extension accessories are available to complete the system, which requires a fiber optic monitor (not included).
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction within the FOS-Series lies in the sheath and tip coating materials:
- FOS-LT Series: Utilizes PTFE for the cable material, suitable for general applications requiring EMI/RFI immunity.
- FOS-LU Series: Incorporates a polyimide coated sensor tip designed to be more durable than standard coatings while maintaining the same measurement range and performance specifications.
Variants are differentiated by length, indicated in the model number (e.g., -2 for 2 meters, -10 for 10 meters). No other dimensional variations such as insertion depth or overall housing dimensions are specified beyond the probe diameter of 1.6 mm (1/16").
