Supported Applications
The Omega UXLR50 Series consists of extra long-range ultrasonic sensors designed for non-contact distance measurement and level monitoring in industrial environments. These ruggedized transducers perform object ranging, roll diameter tracking, loop control, dimensioning, proximity detection, and sort/select operations without physical contact with the target.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The UXLR50 series provides a maximum measurement range of 50 Ft. (15.2m) with a dead band of 12 in. (30.5cm). Accuracy is specified as better than 0.5% of target distance in stable, homogeneous air environments; performance may be affected by temperature gradients, target echo strength, and the speed of sound in air or vapors. Repeatability for this series is rated at 0.2% of target distance in a stable environment.
Operating conditions span an ambient temperature range of -40 to +158 F (-40 to +70 C), with internal sensor compensation or external Reference Target options available. The sensors are potted and sealed for operation at 0-100% humidity (avoiding heavy condensation) within IP-68, NEMA-4X enclosures.
Measurement rates default to 200 msec (5 Hz) but are adjustable from 5 msec to 2.8 hours; faster measurement rates limit the maximum target distance. Serial data resolution for the UXLR50 is 0.0135 in. (0.343mm).
Configuration Options
The series supports multiple housing materials and mounting configurations to accommodate diverse installation requirements:
- Housing Materials: Standard models feature 316 stainless steel construction; a PVC model (UXLR50-25NPT-FR) is available for specific service needs.
- Mounting Options: Configurations include clamp mount, rear-mounted 1.5 in NPT thread, and dual 2.5 in NPT threads on the front and rear (PVC model).
- Outputs: Full-featured models provide five outputs: 0-10 VDC voltage, 4-20 mA sourcing current loop, 4-20 mA sinking current loop, and two switches. Switches are rated at 150 mA and configurable as PNP or NPN (external 40 VDC max) in setpoint or window modes.
- Communication: Serial interfaces include RS-232 for PC COM port connection or addressable RS-485 multi-drop networks. Protocols support Modbus slave, ASCII, or SYNCH with baud rates from 9600 to 115200.
- Cabling: Sensors include a permanently attached 6.5-ft (2m) shielded PUR cable with tinned ends; the UXLR50 utilizes a 9-wire configuration for full outputs or a 4-wire version for serial-only models. M12 connectors on an 18" cable are available via extension kits.
Power requirements are 10-30 VDC @ 70 mA max, with typical consumption of 45 mA at 24VDC input +I/O. Configuration is performed using the included OmegaVIEW software for Windows; pushbutton Teach functionality is not available on UXLR50 models.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between stainless steel and PVC housing materials, with specific dimensional differences: 316 stainless steel clamp-mount units measure 2.3 in (59mm) x 4.8 in (122 mm), while rear-mounted variants are 2.5 in (63 mm) x 5.9 in (150mm). The PVC model measures 2.5 in (63.5 mm) x 5.0 in (127 mm).
Model codes define the specific interface and mounting: "CM" denotes clamp mount, "15NPT-RM" indicates rear-mounted 1.5-in NPT thread, and "25NPT-FR" specifies dual 2.5-in NPT threads on a PVC housing. Interface suffixes differentiate between RS-232 (code 232) and addressable RS-485 (code 485). Unlike the U-Series 30 models, which include pushbutton Teach adjustments, UXLR50 configuration relies exclusively on OmegaVIEW software.
