Supported Applications

The Omega FL-9000 and FL9000-AC series are rugged, low-cost, direct-reading industrial flow meters designed for instantaneous visual measurement of liquid flow rates in closed piping systems. These variable area flow meters utilize a piston-type design to indicate flow without requiring electrical connections or straight pipe runs. The series is calibrated specifically for water (1.0 specific gravity) and oil (0.876 specific gravity, 32 cSt viscosity), with the FL-9000 models rated for capacities ranging from 0.5 to 4 GPM up to 4.0 to 28 GPM depending on the model.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series provides an accuracy of ±5% of full scale with a repeatability of ±1%. The standard operating temperature range is +32 °F to +250 °F (0 °C to +121 °C). For meters equipped with Type 1 PVC fittings, the maximum process temperature is limited to +32 °F to +140 °F (0 °C to +60 °C). The pressure rating for standard configurations is a maximum of 325 PSI (22.4 bar); however, meters with Type 1 PVC fittings are subject to normal PVC system ratings.

Installation requires alignment of the flow direction arrow with system flow and independent support near inlet and outlet connections to avoid pipe flexing. The series is not designed for human applications or systems with large degrees of particulate contamination; a minimum filtration of 200 mesh (74 micron) is recommended.

Key Performance Specifications

  • Accuracy: ±5% FS
  • Repeatability: ±1%
  • Maximum Pressure: 22.4 bar (325 psig)
  • Temperature Range: +32 °F to +250 °F (0 °C to +121 °C); reduced for PVC fittings
  • Calibration Fluids: Water and Oil as specified above

Configuration Options

The FL9000 series offers a configurable envelope of sizes, materials, and connection types to accommodate various piping requirements. The meters are constructed from high-impact polysulfone plastic (Radel®) for the body, piston, and cone, with wetted components including T300 Stainless Steel springs, PH15-7MO Stainless Steel retaining rings, Buna-N seals, and a red indicator ring.

Available Sizes and Connections

The series supports multiple nominal sizes ranging from 1/2" to 2", with specific dimensional variations based on the fitting type:

  • NPT Fittings (FL-90xx, FL-91xx): Available in 1/2", 3/4", and 1" sizes. The 1/2" NPTF & BSPT models feature female connections with a length of 7.75 in (196.8 mm) for brass and stainless steel variants.
  • Solder/Sweat Fittings: Available for 3/4", 1-1/2" sizes, fitting nominal copper tubing dimensions such as ¼" or 1" type M.
  • PVC Socket Weld (FL-92xx): Designed for socket weld connections in PVC systems. The FL-9000 and FL-9100 series with NPT male fittings have a length of 5¼" (133 mm), while the FL-9200 solder fitting models measure 7¾" (196.8 mm) L.
  • Thread Standards: Connections include NPT ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, BSPT ISOR7, and BSPP ISO228.

Material Options

Fittings are available in C360 Brass, PVC, or T303 Stainless Steel depending on the model configuration. Non-wetted materials include Polypropylene for limit indicators and Polyester scales. The series is RoHS compliant.

Key Product Differences

The FL9000 family distinguishes models by fitting type, material compatibility, and flow range:

  • NPT Fitting Models (FL-90xx / FL-91xx): These units feature 1 NPT male connections. The "Water" series (e.g., FL-9004) is calibrated for water, while the "Oil*" series (e.g., FL-9104) is calibrated for oil with a specific gravity of 0.376 as noted in ordering tables.
  • Solder Fitting Models (FL-92xx): Designed to fit nominal copper tubing, these models are available for water flow measurement ranges from 0.5 to 4 GPM up to 4.0 to 28 GPM.
  • Housing and Size Differences: The FL-9000 and FL-9100 series (NPT) generally measure 133 mm (5¼") in length, whereas the FL-9200 series (solder fitting) measures 196.8 mm (7¾") L.

Installation notes specify that liquid pipe sealants, PVC/CPVC primers, or cements containing solvents incompatible with polysulfone plastic must not be used on the flow meter body. Pipe wrenches should not be applied to the body; an open-end wrench is required for installation using integral hex flats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great equipment and great price I do not work directly with this material but the Maintenance Team was happy with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent company to work with The product works great. I must say the customer service I encountered was second to none. I would not hesitate to purchase from Omega Eng.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good product I purchased this product primarily because of the temperature rating and the cost. Most of the flow meters I looked at in this price category did not meet the required temp or pressure rating. This one did.

Hello, The flow in my system is between 0 and 25 gpm. If I put on model FL-9028 (4 to 28 gpm) and the flow is lower than 4 gpm is the flowmeter completly close and no water is running or water is still flowing? Thank!

Asked by: MAC007
Thank you for your inquiry. The minimum flow rate is 4 GPM and the plunger will allow water to pass thru if under that flow rate.
