Supported Applications

The Omega Cutler-Hammer® E58 Harsh Duty Series photoelectric sensors are engineered for rugged industrial environments requiring high resistance to physical shock, chemical attack, and moisture intrusion. The series is designed for use in automotive, machine tool, food processing, and forest products industries where exposure to harsh chemicals is common.

These sensors support demanding washdown applications with a pressure rating of 83 bar (1200 psi). They are suitable for high-temperature environments and feature visible red beams to facilitate alignment in various industrial settings.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The E58 series operates across specific ambient temperature ranges depending on the housing diameter: 18 mm models operate from -40 to 70°C (-40 to 158°F), while 30 mm models operate from -25 to 55°C (-10 to 131°F). Storage temperatures follow similar limits, with general storage rated at -40 to 55°C (-40 to 131°F).

Performance specifications include a shock rating of 100 g for 3 mS ½ sinewave pulse and vibration resistance of 30 g over 20 Hz to 2 kHz. Response times vary by configuration: AC operation is rated at 10 mS, DC operation at 2 mS, and 2-wire models at 35 mS.

Sensing ranges are defined by the specific model type:

  • Thru-Beam (30 mm): Optimum range of 0.03 to 90 m (0.1 to 300') with a sensing distance up to 250 m (800').
  • Polarized Reflex (30 mm): Sensing range of 10 m (34'), optimum range of 0.03 to 6 m (0.1 to 20').
  • Perfect Prox® Background Rejection (18 mm): Nominal range of 100 mm (4"), optimum range of 13 to 76 mm (0.5 to 3").
  • Perfect Prox® Background Rejection (30 mm): Nominal range of 280 mm (11"), optimum range of 28 to 228 mm (1 to 9").

Sunlight immunity is rated at 5,000 foot-candles for Perfect Prox models and 10,000 foot-candles for other configurations.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable options across housing sizes, sensing technologies, electrical connections, and output types to meet specific installation needs.

  • Housing Sizes: Available in 18 mm (0.71") and 30 mm (1.30") diameters with overall lengths of 80 mm (3.15") for the smaller size and 111 mm (4.36") for the larger.
  • Sensing Technologies: Includes Thru-Beam, Polarized Reflex, and Perfect Prox® Background Rejection modes.
  • Electrical Connection: Standard configuration includes a 2 m Cable.
  • Output Signals (4-Wire): VMOS (bi-directional) AC or NPN (sink) DC. Current switching is rated at 300 mA max; voltage switching supports up to 186V peak maximum.
  • Output Signals (2-Wire): DMOS/bipolar for 18 mm and DMOS for 30 mm models. Current switching limits are 100 mA for 18 mm and 300 mA for 30 mm; voltage switching supports AC up to 186V peak maximum or DC up to 50 Vdc maximum.
  • Operating Voltage: Thru-Beam models support 20 to 132 Vac 50/60 Hz or 15 to 30 Vdc. Perfect Prox® models operate on 90 to 132 Vac 50/60 Hz or 18 to 50 Vdc.
  • Enclosure Rating: NEMA 1, 2, 3, 3R, 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12, 12K, and 13 (IP65).

Key Product Differences

The E58 series distinguishes itself through specific model families tailored to different detection requirements. Thru-Beam configurations are available as separate Source and Detector units with a field of view diameter of 830 mm (33") at 7.6 m (25'). Polarized Reflex models utilize reflectors, offering a field of view of 150 mm (6") diameter at 6 m (20').

Perfect Prox® Background Rejection sensors provide fixed nominal ranges with specific cut-off distances: the 18 mm model ignores objects beyond 127 mm (5"), while the 30 mm model cuts off at 318 mm (12.5"). These models feature a narrow field of view, measuring 10 mm (0.38") diameter at 100 mm (4") for the 18 mm size and 26 mm (1") diameter at 280 mm (11") for the 30 mm size.

Construction materials include a 303 SS housing, tempered glass lenses, PVDF components, and FKM seals. The series supports Light Operate or Dark Operate modes depending on the specific model selection. Accessories such as brackets (E57KM18, E58KAM18B, E57KM30) and reflectors of varying diameters (32 mm to 76 mm) are available for installation support.
