Supported Applications
The Omega OM5 Series provides compact, modular isolated analog signal conditioning for measurement and control applications. Each module delivers a single channel of isolated input or output processing, filtering, amplifying, and converting sensor signals to high-level analog outputs compatible with data acquisition systems. The series supports over 115 different modules covering voltage, current, true RMS, RTD, thermocouple, potentiometer, strain gage, frequency, and 2-wire transmitter inputs.
Modules are CSA Certified (Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D) and FM Approved for operation in hazardous environments. The system is designed to interface directly with sensors and analog signals, providing standardized outputs suitable for host systems requiring isolated signal buffering or amplification.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The OM5 modules operate within an ambient temperature range of -40°C to +85°C (-40°F to 185°F) and a storage temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Relative humidity ratings are specified as 0 to 95% noncondensing for most modules, with OM5-IAC true RMS input modules rated at 0 to 90% noncondensing.
Performance specifications vary by module type:
- Narrow Bandwidth (4Hz): Modules such as OM5-IMV, OM5-IV, OM5-II, and RTD/Thermocouple inputs typically feature a 0.2s response time to 90% span.
- Wide Bandwidth: Strain gage (OM5-WBS) and wideband voltage/millivolt modules offer up to 10kHz bandwidth; frequency input modules range from 0 to 500Hz through 0 to 100kHz with response times as fast as 20mS.
- Accuracy: Key specifications include ±0.05% accuracy for most voltage and current inputs, ±0.08% span for potentiometer (OM5-PT) modules, and temperature-specific accuracies ranging from ±0.13°C to ±2.21°C depending on the sensor type and range.
- Isolation: Input-to-output common mode voltage is rated at 1500Vrms maximum continuous with transient protection per ANSI/IEEE C37.90.1-1989.
Configuration Options
The series offers extensive configurability through a modular architecture where input/output modules plug into various backpanels. The system supports the following capabilities:
- Sensor Inputs: Supports Thermocouple types J, K, T, E, R, S, C, N, B; RTD elements including 100Ω Pt (α=0.00385), 120Ω Ni (α=0.00672), and 10Ω Cu (α=0.004274); Potentiometers from 0 to 10KΩ; Strain gages with full/half bridge configurations.
- Signal Ranges: Voltage inputs span ±10mV to ±100mV and ±1V to ±40V. Current inputs support 0mA to 20mA or 4mA to 20mA. True RMS input ranges from 100mV to 10V rms.
- Outputs: Standard outputs include ±5V, 0V to +5V, and current loops of 4 to 20mA or 0 to 20mA. Voltage output modules (OM5-AV) provide ranges such as 0 to +10V / ±10V.
- Excitation: RTD/potentiometer excitation currents include 0.25mA, 1.0mA, and 0.10mA options; strain gage modules provide isolated 10V or 3.333V excitation sources.
- Housing & Mounting: Modules measure 2.28" x 2.26" x 0.60" (58mm x 57mm x 15mm). Backpanels are available in single, dual, eight, and sixteen channel configurations with DIN rail mounting options.
