Supported Applications

The ACI Balco Wall Plate Series is a single-point temperature sensor designed for space temperature sensing in commercial heating and cooling building management systems. The series features decorative wall plates intended for mounting over standard single-gang junction boxes or directly into walls using drywall anchors. Documented applications include schools, gymnasiums, and scenarios requiring tamper-proof security measures.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Balco RTD Wall Plate operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 71°C (-40 to 160°F) with a matching storage temperature capability. The sensor functions in humidity levels from 10 to 95% RH, non-condensing. Performance specifications for the Balco PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) RTD element include:

  • Accuracy: +/- 1% at 70°F (21.1°C)
  • Sensor Output: 1000 Ohms nominal
  • Response Time: 25 Seconds nominal for a 63% step change
  • Stability: +/- 0.05% after 1000 Hours @ 150°C (302°F)
  • Temperature Coefficient: 4618 ppm/°C over the 0-100°C range
  • Maximum Operating Current: 5 mA

The sensor utilizes a double encapsulation process with thermally conductive epoxy to mitigate moisture effects and enhance thermal response. A cross-linked polyethylene foam pad (FMVSS-302 flammability rating) is included to insulate the sensor from wall drafts.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable housing materials, lead wire specifications, and optional security or certification features. The standard configuration includes two non-polarity sensitive 14" (35.56cm) leads with silver-plated copper conductors insulated by Etched Teflon (PTFE) colored wires rated to MIL-W-16878/4 (Type E).

Housing and Mounting Options

  • A/BALCO-SP Series: 430 Stainless Steel with a Brushed Satin Finish. Dimensions: 4.50" x 2.78" x 0.187" (114.3mm x 70.6mm x 4.76mm). Weight: 0.14 lbs. (63.5g).
  • A/BALCO-AP Series: Aluminum with a Smooth Satin Finish, Clear Anodized. Dimensions: 4.50" x 2.78" x 0.187" (114.3mm x 70.6mm x 4.76mm). Weight: 0.08 lbs. (36.29g).

Available Options and Accessories

  • Tamper Proof Hardware: Two #6-32 x 5/8" Zinc Plated Flat Head screws with a 1/8" drive (Item: A/TAMPER PROOF SCREWS) and a Tamper-Resistant Screwdriver Insert Bit.
  • Certification: NIST Certificate available for the sensor calibration points.

The series carries CE, RoHS, WEEE, and UKCA approvals. Installation guidelines specify avoiding external walls, air registers, diffusers, vents, windows, heat sources (lamps, radiators, direct sunlight), and confined areas such as shelves or closets to ensure accurate readings.

Key Product Differences

The primary distinction between the two standard variants is the plate material. The A/BALCO-SP model utilizes 430 Stainless Steel for a brushed finish, while the A/BALCO-AP model uses clear anodized aluminum with a smooth satin finish. Both models share identical sensor specifications (1 KΩ nominal Balco RTD), lead wire length and gauge, foam pad insulation, and operating ranges.

Custom ordering allows for the addition of NIST certification to either housing type via the model number suffix "NIST". The series is covered by ACI's Five-Year Limited Warranty.
