Supported Applications
The Omega WT4401 series consists of laboratory-grade benchtop wind tunnels designed to provide a highly uniform airflow over a test section. The system is engineered for calibrating various probes and instruments by establishing precise flow rates through differential pressure monitoring between taps connected via tubing.
- Calibration of air velocity transducers
- Verification of anemometers (e.g., hot wire)
- Testing of temperature sensors in airflow environments
Operating Conditions & Performance
The WT4401 series features a 12 A motor adjustable from 0 RPM to 10,000 RPM. Flow rate performance varies by configuration and the use of restrictive plates:
- No restrictive plate used: 1000 fpm to 7500 fpm (accuracy: 1 % reading)
- Restrictive Plate A used: 250 fpm to 1500 fpm (accuracy: 2 % reading)
- Restrictive Plate B used: 25 fpm to 300 fpm (accuracy: 2 % reading)
The series supports a broader documented range of 25 FPM to 9000 FPM (0.15 to 45 m/s) when utilizing the full set of restrictive plates and configurations as detailed in calibration sheets. Each unit is supplied with NIST traceable certificates.
Physical Specifications
- Housing material: Fiberglass, heavy duty air cooled benchtop metal case
- Overall dimensions: 1.5 m L x 431.8 mm H (5' x 17")
- Test cross section: 101.6 mm x 101.6 mm (4 in x 4 in)
- Power supply: 120 Vac (add suffix “-220V” for 220 Vac operation, no additional charge)
Installation Notes
The manual advises against using the wind tunnel in small rooms with less than 1,800 cubic feet. Intake and exhaust should be located away from open windows, doorways, or corridors where people are walking to minimize room air currents.
Configuration Options
The series is available in two primary configurations: the standard electronics box (WT4401-S) and the deluxe electronics box (WT4401-D). Both models include a differential pressure monitor, motor controller, silicone tubing, brass compression fittings with Teflon ferrules, and calibration report sheets.
Standard Electronics Box (WT4401-S)
- Differential pressure monitoring
- Includes DP41-S Indicator operator's manual
Deluxe Electronics Box (WT4401-D)
The deluxe configuration adds environmental monitoring capabilities to the standard differential pressure system:
- Ambient barometric pressure monitoring (PX02C1-16A5T sensor)
- Ambient temperature and humidity monitoring (HX97-A sensor)
- Three DP25-E panel meters
- One DP41B-S panel meter
All meters in both standard and deluxe packages provide a 0 to 10 Vdc analog output. The system includes two restrictive plates (A and B) for adjusting flow ranges.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction between the WT4401-S and WT4401-D models is the instrumentation package included in the electronics box:
- WT4401-S: Includes a standard electronics box with differential pressure monitoring only.
- WT4401-D: Includes a deluxe electronics box that adds barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity sensors alongside the differential pressure monitor.
The series also offers re-calibration services (model suffixes -CAL) for both standard and deluxe configurations. Optional accessories include additional calibration report sheets in metric or English units, replacement gaskets, plexiglass covers, and various sensor types such as Type K thermocouples and RTD temperature sensors.
