Supported Applications

The Omega LDC Series Low Density Cartridge Heaters are designed for applications requiring lower operating temperatures and watt densities. Documented uses include heat sealing, laminating, packaging, labeling, molds, food processing, refrigeration, shoe machinery, glue guns, wax pots, and heating liquids or gases.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series features a helically wound Nickel-Chrome resistance wire within an Alloy 304 stainless steel sheath filled with high-purity Magnesium Oxide (MgO) and ceramic insulators. Maximum operating temperature is rated up to 650°C (1200°F). Performance ratings for maximum watt density range from 3.1 to 7.0 Watt/cm² (20 to 45 Watt/in²), depending on heater size and operating temperature.

Standard electrical specifications include a Type F termination with 254 mm (10") internally connected flexible lead wires featuring high-temperature insulation, UL approved for 300 or 600V service and rated to 250°C (482°F). Power supply options are listed as 120V or 240V AC. Wattage tolerance is Plus 5%, minus 10%; resistance tolerance is Plus 10%, minus 5%.

Configuration Options

The LDC series supports a broad range of dimensional and electrical configurations beyond the specific stocked variants:

  • Diameters: Nominal sizes from 3/16" to 1 1/4", with actual diameters ranging from 0.185 in (4.70 mm) to 1.250 in (31.75 mm).
  • Lengths: Overall lengths available from 76.2 mm to 609.6 mm (3" to 24").
  • Voltages and Amperage: Maximum voltage ratings vary by diameter, including 240V for smaller diameters up to 1/2", and 480V** for diameters from 5/8" through 1 1/4". Maximum amperage ranges from 1.5A to 30A depending on size.
  • Customization: Custom engineered heaters are available upon request, specifying diameter, length, wattage, voltage, termination types, lead length, cable/braid length, application type, operating temperature, and special features.

The series is UL recognized and CSA certified (UL File Number E65652; CSA File Number 043099) in many design variations. Media compatibility includes non-corrosive liquids and gases; for immersion heating of corrosive solutions, OMEGA must be contacted.

Key Product Differences

The series encompasses multiple model numbers corresponding to specific sheath lengths and wattages. For example, the LDC00347 is a 127.0 mm (5") unit rated at 140 Watts with a density of 1.6 Watt/cm² (11 Watt/in²), while the LDC00371 is a 609.6 mm (24") unit rated at 1400 Watts with a density of 3.1 Watt/cm² (20 Watt/in²). Standard model numbers listed in specifications are terminated with Type F flexible leads, 254 mm (10") long.

Dimensional tolerances vary by size: diameter tolerance is ±0.002" for sizes up to 1", and ±0.005" for the 1 1/4" size. Length tolerance is ±1/16" up to 152 mm (6") long, increasing to ±1/8" over that length. Camber tolerance is specified as 0.010" per foot of length.

End seals are constructed by roll crimping the sheath over a 304 stainless steel end disc with a mica spacer electrically insulating the heater core; this style is not moisture proof.
