Supported Applications
The Omega OMEGALUX® CWM series is a constant wattage medium temperature heating cable designed for pipe tracing situations requiring higher temperatures for process maintenance and freeze protection. The series maintains unchanged heat output per foot regardless of the installed length, supporting applications where flexibility in cut-to-length installation is required.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The CWM series operates on 120V, 240V, and 480 Vac power supplies. It features a maximum intermittent exposure temperature/power-off rating of 200/392°C. The cable is constructed with FEP material (Flame-retardant insulation jacket) for bus wire insulation, utilizing an 11 mil FEP jacket on each 12 AWG copper bus wire.
Performance specifications include:
- Wattage Options: 4, 8, 10 and 12 W/ft
- Cable Dimensions (Standard): Approximate size of 8 x 5 mm (5/16 x 1/4")
- Minimum Bend Radius: 6 times minor diameter
- Steam Cleaning Capability: CWM can withstand 200°C (392°F), 150 psig steam purging of process piping when not energized.
- Circuit Breaker Selection: To determine the circuit breaker size required, divide the W/ft (at operating voltage) by the operating voltage; multiply the result times the total installed cable length in feet; multiply this result times 1.2 to get the minimum circuit breaker size.
A caution note states that fire and electrical shock may result if products are used improperly or installed or used by non-qualified personnel. The minimum length of heating cable is 25 ft.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable output wattage, voltage ratings, and jacketing options to meet specific installation needs:
- Jacket Configurations:
- Tinned Copper Braid (-C suffix)
- FEP Overcoat (-CT) and Tinned Copper Overbraid (add suffix “-CT” to model number). The -CT variant provides protection from most aqueous and chemically corrosive solutions.
- Model Number Format: CWM<Output> - <Voltage> - <Overbraid Option>. Example: CWM12-1C denotes a 120 Vac heating cable, 12 W/ft.
- Cable Weights (per 1000'): 43.5 kg (96 lb) for Tinned Copper Braid (-C); 49.9 kg (110 lb) for FEP Overcoat (-CT).
- Maximum Circuit Lengths: Vary by wattage and voltage, ranging from 60.9 m (200 ft) to 243.8 m (800 ft) depending on the specific model configuration.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the CWM series are distinguished by wattage density, operating voltage, and jacketing type:
- -C Models (Tinned Copper Braid): Standard configuration with approximate cable size of 8 x 5 mm (5/16 x 1/4"). Available in 4 W/ft, 8 W/ft, and 12 W/ft at various voltages.
- -CT Models (FEP Overcoat): Enhanced configuration with FEP overcoat and tinned copper overbraid. These models have an approximate cable size of 26 x 6 mm (1/2 x 1/4") and offer protection from most aqueous and chemically corrosive solutions.
- Voltage Ratings: Models are available for 120V, 240V, and 480V operation. For example, the CWM12-4C model supports 480 Vac at 12 W/ft with a maximum circuit length of 243.8 m (800 ft).
