Supported Applications
The Omega BB-4A series is a portable, rugged blackbody temperature reference source designed to test and calibrate non-contact infrared temperature instruments. Primary applications include the calibration of infrared pyrometers and transmitters with a spot size diameter less than 22 mm (0.88"). The unit features a built-in precision PID digital controller for stable operation as a high-temperature blackbody standard.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The BB-4A series operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) and supports humidity levels from 0 to 90% RH non-condensing. The device provides a measurement range of 100 to 982°C (212 to 1800°F). Performance specifications include an accuracy of ±1°C, ±0.25% rdg (±1.8°F ±0.25% rdg) and stability of ±0.15°C or less. The internal sensing element is a Type K thermocouple.
Warm-up time for the unit is 1.0 hr from ambient to 982°C (1800°F). Power requirements are 400 W, supplied via 115 Vac, 50/60 Hz or 230 Vac, 50/60 Hz depending on the model variant.
Configuration Options
The series is available in two voltage configurations to accommodate different regional power standards:
- BB-4A: High temperature blackbody, 115 Vac range 100 to 982°C (212 to 1800°F).
- BB-4A-230VAC: High temperature blackbody, 230 Vac range 100 to 982°C (212 to 1800°F).
The device includes a built-in Type K reference probe output and RS232 standard communication. Each unit is supplied with an NIST-Traceable Calibration Certificate including 3 data points.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the BB-4A series differ primarily by input voltage rating, which also affects physical weight:
- BB-4A (115 Vac): Weight is 8 kg (17 lb).
- BB-4A-230VAC (230 Vac): Weight is 15 kg (33 lb).

What is the depth of the cavity? My setup uses spherical lenses for image formation and I would like the focal point of the objective lens to lie on the surface of the black body.

hi, will the 230VAC unit work in Spain?

A 230 VAC model will operate properly in Spain because the mains supply there is 230 V.

What is the diameter of the reference probe well on the back of the BB-4A?

I believe you have the wrong idea for what's on the back of this unit. There is no probe well on the back, there is a connection for an external reference probe. The connection is a RSJ-K-R which used with any standard size connector. If you have further questions please contact Temp@Omega.com

The reference thermocouple probe at the base of cavity on the rear of the calibrator is reading around 10 degrees F more than the SV and PV. The SV and PV match what the Camera is reading. Does the camera need calibration? Or its fine?
The port in the back is strictly for reference, and will read higher than the cavity, which is at a calibrated emissivity of .99 so your camera is fine.
