Supported Applications

The ACI Nickel Copper Averaging Series is a multi-point temperature sensor designed for use with electronic controllers in commercial heating and cooling building management systems. The series provides an average temperature reading of the air inside large ducts, offering improved accuracy compared to single point sensors. Documented applications include Air Handlers, Roof Top Units, Mixed Air/Discharge/Supply Air Temperature Monitoring, Data Centers, and Hospitals.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series utilizes a Nickel RTD (PTC) sensor element with a nominal output of 1000 Ohms at 21.1°C (70°F). The sensing element is constructed from copper tubing, providing improved thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance compared to aluminum alternatives. Sensor stability is rated at +/- 0.05% after 1000 Hours @ 150°C (302°F), with a self-heating of 0.3°C/mW in still air.

Performance specifications vary by probe length and temperature:

  • 8' & 12' Lengths: +/- 0.31°C (+/- 0.56°F) @ 21.1°C (70°F); +/- 0.71°C (+/- 1.28°F) @ 54.4°C (130°F).
  • 24' Lengths: +/- 0.41°C (+/- 0.74°F) @ 21.1°C (70°F); +/- 0.87°C (+/- 1.56°F) @ 54.4°C (130°F).

The sensor operating temperature range is -40 to 250°F (-40 to 121°C). The response time for a 63% step change is 8 Seconds nominal. Operating humidity ranges from 10 to 95% RH, non-condensing.

Configuration Options

The series supports multiple configurations across probe lengths, enclosure types, and optional certifications. The sensing element diameter is 0.210" (5.34mm) nominal with a lead length of 12" (30.5cm). Lead wires are Etched Teflon (PTFE) Colored Leads rated to MIL-W-16878/4 (Type E), utilizing Silver Plated Copper conductors.

Probe Lengths and Sensing Points

  • 8' Sensor: Four sensing points.
  • 12' Sensor: Four sensing points.
  • 24' Sensor: Nine sensing points.

Enclosure Options and Ratings

The series is available with four enclosure types, each with specific material compositions and environmental ratings:

  • Galvanized Enclosure (GD): Galvanized Steel; NEMA 1 (IP10); Ambient range -40°C to 115°C (-40°F to 239°F).
  • Plastic Box Enclosure (PB): ABS Plastic, UL94-HB, Plenum Rated; Ambient range -30°C to 90°C (-22°F to 194°F).
  • Bell Box Enclosure (BB): Aluminum; NEMA 3R; Ambient range -40°C to 115°C (-40°F to 239°F).
  • NEMA 4X Enclosure (4X): Polystyrene Plastic, UL94-V2; NEMA 4X (IP 66); Ambient range -40°C to 70°C (-40°F to 158°F).

Certifications and Accessories

Agency approvals include RoHS2, WEEE, UL94-HB, UL94-V2, UL94-HBF, FMVSS-302, MIL-R-6130C, and Din 43760. An optional NIST Certificate (3 Points) is available for select configurations. Accessories include a Copper Capillary Mounting Clip (Item #130525), Plastic Capillary Mounting Clips in bags of 50 (Item #145430), and Universal Plastic Mounting Clips in bags of 6 (Item #145421).

Key Product Differences

The Nickel Copper Averaging Series is distinguished by its copper sensing element, which offers antibacterial properties against airborne contaminants. The series model number follows the format A/ - <SENSOR SERIES> - <MODEL SERIES> - <CONFIGURATION> - <PROBE LENGTH> - <ENCLOSURE> - <NIST>. For example, a 24' sensor with a NEMA 4X enclosure and NIST certification is designated A/1K-NI-A-24'-4X-NIST. The series includes an integrated foam pad made of Neoprene/EPDM/SBR Polymer (UL94-HBF; FMVSS-302; MIL-R-6130C) to seal the duct and dampen vibrations.
