Supported Applications

The Omega OMEGALUX® CS Series comprises Stainless Steel Sheath Cartridge Heaters designed to provide high wattage in limited spaces. These heaters are manufactured with precise dimensions and tolerances to ensure maximum heat transfer for minimum core temperature and faster heating. Documented applications include dies, molds, platens, heat sealing, labeling, packaging, and hot melt adhesive machinery.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series is available in two construction types with distinct thermal limits:

  • CSS Series: Features coiled resistance elements and ceramic cores for economical design. Sheath temperature rating to 677°C (1250°F).
  • CSH Series: Features swaged construction for longer life at higher temperatures. Sheath temperature rating to 760°C (1400°F).

Heaters are designed to fit holes drilled and reamed to the nominal diameter of the heater. The series supports diameters from 3.2 to 19 mm (1/8 to 3/4") with lengths ranging from 25 mm (1 in) up to 305 mm (12 in). Standard voltage options are 120V and 240V.

Performance tolerances per the specification table include:

  • Diameter Tolerance: From 0.025 to 0.229 mm (0.001 to 0.009") less the nominal diameter in inches.
  • Length Tolerance: ±2% or ±1.6 mm (1/16"), whichever is greater.
  • Camber Tolerance: 1.7 mm/m (0.020"/ft) of length for units up to 305 mm (12") L.
  • Wattage Tolerance: +5% to -10% at rated voltage.

Note: Watt densities listed in selection tables are based on a unit installed in mild steel. Different materials affect these values; the lower the thermal conductivity of the material, the lower the maximum allowable watts per square inch.

Configuration Options

The CSS-CSH series offers configurable dimensions across diameter and length to match specific installation requirements. Key variant parameters include:

  • Diameters: 3.18 mm (1/8"), 4 mm (5/32"), 4.76 mm (3/16"), 6.35 mm (1/4"), 9.53 mm (3/8"), 12.7 mm (1/2"), 15.9 mm (5/8"), and 19 mm (3/4").
  • Sheath Material: 300 Series stainless steel.
  • Lead Length: Standard lead length is 150 mm L (6"). Custom lengths are indicated in specific model numbers (e.g., "-24" LEADS", "-20"").
  • Lead Insulation:
    • CSH Series: Fiberglass, rated to 250°C (482°F).
    • CSS Series: PFA for heater diameters of 6.4 mm (1/4") and smaller; Fiberglass for heater diameters of 7.9 mm (5/16") and larger.

The series supports a wide range of wattages depending on diameter, length, and voltage selection. Model numbers follow the format CSS-- or CSH--.

Key Product Differences

The primary distinction between series members is the construction method:

  • CSS Series (Standard Construction): Utilizes coiled resistance elements and ceramic cores. This design offers an economical solution for standard heating applications.
  • CSH Series (High Watt Density/Swaged Construction): Features swaged construction intended to provide longer life at higher temperatures compared to the CSS series.

Variations also exist in lead insulation materials based on heater diameter and series type. Additionally, specific model numbers include suffixes indicating non-standard lead lengths (e.g., 18", 20", or 24" leads) which differ from the standard 150 mm L (6") configuration.
