Supported Applications
The Dwyer Series 160S "S" Type Pitot Tubes are designed for flow measurement in dirty, particulate-laden air or gas streams. These instruments serve environmental testing fields and smoke stack applications where large-diameter tubing is required to avoid plugging under harsh conditions.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Series 160S operates with process temperatures up to 1500°F (815.5°C) and pressure ratings up to 100 psig (6.89 bar). Measurement capabilities cover velocity pressures from 0.01 to 4.0 inches of water, corresponding to air velocities ranging from low-flow conditions up to 14,000 FPM depending on the traverse method used.
Accuracy is documented as ±5% for tests run using the recommended traverse method and ±2% for maximum accuracy in laboratory applications. The probe features a 5/16" diameter stainless steel construction with total pressure openings facing upstream and static pressure openings facing downstream, both perpendicular to airflow.
Installation Requirements
- Duct diameter should be 4" or larger.
- Take readings in a smooth, straight duct section: minimum 62 duct diameters upstream and 12 diameters downstream.
- An egg-crate type straightener is recommended upstream.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable insertion lengths of 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 inches. Models are available in standard configurations or as Permanent Mount (PM) versions.
- Process Connections: Standard models feature 1/8" FNPT connections permanently welded to the unit. PM models include a 1 inch dia. welded stainless steel sleeve and adjustable compression fitting with 1 inch male NPT mounting threads.
- Housing & Materials: Constructed from stainless steel tubing (5/16" diameter) for both total and static pressure lines to resist plugging in particulate-laden streams.
- Accessories: A carrying case (Model A-160-CASE) is available for pitot tubes up to 48". Two barbed tubing adapters for 3/16" I.D. rubber or vinyl tubing are included with the unit.
Key Product Differences
The Series 160S distinguishes between standard portable models and Permanent Mount (PM) configurations based on installation needs:
- Standard Models (e.g., 160S-18): Designed for temporary or handheld testing with 1/8" FNPT connections.
- Permanent Mount Models (e.g., 160S-18PM): Include a 1 inch dia. welded stainless steel sleeve and adjustable compression fitting with 1 inch male NPT mounting threads to allow depth adjustment and locking in place.
Note: For permanent-mount models, insertion lengths over 24" (61 cm) are not recommended due to the risk of excessive deflection. Total pressure tubes and static pressure tubes on these units are precisely aligned and welded together every 6 inches for maximum accuracy, strength, and long-term durability.
