Supported Applications

The Omega FMG-550 Series is a hot-tap metal insertion electromagnetic flow meter designed to measure the flow rate of conductive liquids in pipes ranging from 2 inches (DN50) to 48 inches (DN1200). The series supports applications involving dirty and high-solid content liquids, as well as water at ambient temperature. It is engineered for hot-tap installations that allow insertion without system shutdown.

Measurement requires a fully developed turbulent flow profile in compliance with ISO 7145-1982 (BS 1042 section 2.2). The sensor supports bi-directional flow and includes empty pipe detection capabilities.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The FMG-550 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -15 to 70°C (5 to 158°F) in non-icing conditions. The process media temperature limit is -15 to 85°C (5 to 185°F). Maximum operating pressure is rated at 20.6 bar @ 25 °C (300 psi @ 77°F), with a maximum installation pressure of 20.7 bar (300 psi) for hot-tap procedures.

Performance specifications include:

  • Flow Range: 0.05 m/s (0.15 ft/s) to 10 m/s (33 ft/s)
  • Accuracy: ±2% of measured value in reference conditions
  • Linearity: ±1% reading + 0.1% of max. range
  • Repeatability: ±0.5% of reading @ 25°C

Safety constraints specify that hot-tap installation at temperatures greater than 40°C (104°F) or with hazardous liquids are not permitted. Systems without a hot-tap valve must be depressurized and vented prior to sensor removal.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable output signals, cable types, and wetted material options tailored for specific installation environments.

  • Output Signals: 4 to 20 mA current (programmable and reversible) or Frequency output. The 4-20 mA loop supports a maximum resistance of 300 Ω with a cable length up to 300 m (1000 ft.).
  • Cable Configurations: Fixed cable models feature a 4-conductor shielded PVC jacket. Submersible options include a watertight rubber cable assembly with a NEMA 6P connector.
  • Housing & Enclosure Ratings: Fixed cable models are rated NEMA 4/IP65; submersible cable models are rated NEMA 6P/IP68.
  • Wetted Materials: The body and electrodes are constructed from 316L Stainless Steel. A PVDF insulator is standard, with O-rings available in FPM (standard), EPDM, or Perfluoroelastomer options.

The sensor includes diagnostic features such as colored LED lights to indicate status and error conditions.

Key Product Differences

Differences within the FMG-550 Series are defined by output type, insertion method, and cable assembly:

  • FMG-553: Magmeter with 9.4" hot tap configuration providing a frequency output.
  • FMG-554: Magmeter with 9.4" hot tap configuration providing a 4 to 20 mA current output.

An optional detachable waterproof cable is available for temporary submersion by adding the "-SUB" suffix to the model number (e.g., FMG-550-S-CABLE). This option includes a NEMA 6P connector and does not incur an additional charge. Custom scaling is available upon consultation with Omega's Flow department.
