Supported Applications
The Omega OMDC-MD Series comprises compact, microprocessor-based DC speed controls designed for field or factory configuration in motion control systems. These units operate using a pulse-accumulation PI algorithm and function as digital speed controllers, time-based process controllers, or ratiometric follower controllers within master-slave configurations.
Documented applications include:
- Water and waste treatment systems
- Conveyor oven controllers
- Synchronized conveyor lines
- Volume OEM applications requiring specialized inputs and outputs
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series provides precise speed regulation with a repeatability of ±½ RPM of set speed over the long term. Units accept an AC input voltage range of 85 to 265 Vdc (noted as 85-265VAC in manual documentation) at 48–62 Hz, depending on the model and source document.
Performance specifications include:
- Output Voltage: 0 to 90 Vdc (at 120 Vac input) or 0 to 180 Vdc (at 240 Vac input).
- Max Continuous Armature DC Amps: 5 A for OMDC-MD10P; 10 A for OMDC-MD3P.
- Max Output H.P.: Up to ½ HP (at 120 Vac) or 1 HP (at 240 Vac) for MD10P models; up to 1 HP (at 120 Vac) or 2 HP (at 240 Vac) for MD3P models.
- Signal Input: 0-5 Vdc to 0-24 Vdc square wave, with a frequency range of 0 - 50,000 Pulses per Minute. Higher frequencies are possible when using the internal frequency divisor/prescaler.
- Design Overload Capacity: 200% for 1 minute.
Ambient operating conditions span -10°C to 45°C (14°F to 113°F) with a humidity rating of up to 95%, non-condensing. The series requires an external pickup or encoder; the on-board power supply provides 5 Vdc @ 50 mA for sensor excitation.
Configuration Options
The OMDC-MD Series is configurable across housing sizes, DIN dimensions, and terminal options to accommodate specific installation requirements. Models feature durable aluminum housings with polycarbonate faceplates (GE Lexan overlay) and are available in ½ DIN or ¼ DIN panel mount configurations.
Housing and Mounting
- OMDC-MD10P: ½ DIN panel mount. Faceplate dimensions: 4.539" W x 2.289" H (115 mm x 58 mm). Required panel depth is 4.625" (117.48mm).
- OMDC-MD3P: ¼ DIN panel mount. Faceplate dimensions: 4.54" W x 4.18" H (115 mm x 106 mm). Required panel depth is 4.625".
- OMDC-MD3P-1: Includes provision for remote pushbutton wiring via a European-style terminal block expansion board.
Connections and Options
- Electrical Connection: 12-position 5mm European Style connector (pluggable optional).
- Terminal Block Torque Setting: Max 4.4 in. lb or .5Nm.
- Optional Accessories:
- Suffix -1: Expansion board for remote push button wiring (e.g., MD3P-1).
- Suffix -P: Optional pluggable European-style terminal block.
- OMDC-PU-40E: Shaft mounted pick-up sensor, 20 pulses per revolution (ordered separately or as an option suffix in some configurations).
Approvals and Ratings
- cULus Recognized Component: MD10P, MD3P - E78180.
- cULus LISTED: MD3E (per manual) / UL US LISTED (per datasheet).
- NEMA Rating: NEMA 4X for MD10P and MD3P; NEMA 4 listed in the manual for MD3E. The data sheet specifies NEMA 4X (IP66) generally.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes models primarily by DIN size, current capacity, and horsepower ratings relative to input voltage:
- OMDC-MD10P vs. OMDC-MD3P: The MD10P is a ½ DIN unit rated for 5 A continuous armature DC amps (max 1 HP at 240 Vac). The MD3P is a ¼ DIN unit rated for 10 A continuous armature DC amps (max 2 HP at 240 Vac).
- OMDC-MD3P vs. OMDC-MD3P-1: Both share the same electrical ratings and housing dimensions, but the MD3P-1 variant includes an expansion board to support remote push button wiring via a European-style terminal block.
