Supported Applications

The Omega Model 868 and 869 Digital Thermometers are handheld RTD thermometers designed for use with 100 ohm platinum RTD sensors. These instruments support both three-wire and four-wire probe configurations conforming to the DIN 43760 standard (alpha = .00385). The series is intended for general temperature measurement applications requiring high accuracy and long-term stability.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Model 868F operates in Fahrenheit with selectable ranges of -199.0 to +199.9°F (resolution 0.1°F) or -360 to +1100°F (resolution 1°F). The Model 869C operates in Celsius with selectable ranges of -199.0 to +199.9°C (resolution 0.1°C) or -220 to +630°C (resolution 1°C). Accuracy specifications include DIN 43760 conformity, repeatability, temperature coefficient for ambient temperatures between 18 to 28°C, time stability over one year, and errors with up to 50 Ω of resistance in each lead; probe errors are excluded. Repeatability is less than 0.2°F typical for one week at constant ambient temperature.

Operating environmental limits are -10 to 50°C (14 to 122°F) with humidity less than 80% RH up to 35°C. Storage conditions allow temperatures from -35 to 60°C (-31 to 140°F) with humidity less than 90% RH up to 35°C. The display is a 3½ digit LCD, 13 mm (0.5") height, featuring polarity, decimal point, open sensor, and overrange indication. Reading rate is 1.5 per second.

Configuration Options

The series supports the following configurable dimensions and options:

  • Sensor Compatibility: 3- or 4-wire 100 Ω Platinum RTD (α=0.00385). Maximum allowable lead resistance for rated accuracy is 50 ohms per lead in four-wire configuration and 10 ohms per lead in three-wire configuration.
  • Power Supply: 9V alkaline battery (included), with typical life of 500 hours. A low-battery indicator displays “LO BAT” when less than 10% of life remains.
  • Connectors: OMEGA® series T instrumentation connectors, specifically model TA4F and TA4FL. Each unit includes a Series T 4-wire connector (TA4F).
  • Housing & Dimensions: Compact design measuring 160 H x 69 W x 31 D mm (6.3 x 2.7 x 1.2") with a net weight of 210 g (7.5 oz). The instrument features high impact plastic construction.
  • Accessories: Available options include SC-800 soft carrying case, MN1604 replacement battery, OT-201-1/2 high thermal conductivity paste for fast surface measurements, and CAL-3-HH NIST-traceable calibration with points.

Key Product Differences

The series consists of two primary models distinguished by temperature unit:

  • Model 868F: RTD Thermometer providing Fahrenheit readout. Supports ranges -199.0 to +199.9°F and -360 to +1100°F.
  • Model 869C: RTD Thermometer providing Celsius readout. Supports ranges -199.0 to +199.9°C and -220 to +630°C.

Note: For best accuracy, it is recommended that the instruments be used in the four-wire configuration with a suitable four-wire probe. If three-wire probes are used with the instrument in the four-wire mode, noisy readings will result (the displayed reading will jump around). The maximum common mode voltage is 42V peak.
