Supported Applications

The Omega ULR30 Series is a long-range ultrasonic distance and level transmitter designed for non-contact measurement in tough industrial environments. The series measures the distance to a target surface without physical contact, making it suitable for applications requiring monitoring of liquid or solid levels where direct immersion is not feasible.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The ULR30 model provides a maximum range of 30 ft (9.1m) with a dead band of 10 in (25.4cm). In stable, homogeneous air environments, accuracy is better than 0.5% of target distance; performance may be affected by temperature gradients, target echo strength, and the speed of sound in air or vapors. Repeatability for the ULR30 is specified as 0.2% of target distance in a stable environment.

Operating ambient temperatures range from -40 to +158 F (-40 to +70 C), with temperature compensation provided by an internal sensor or external Reference Target. The unit operates at humidity levels of 0-100%, though heavy condensation should be avoided. Enclosure ratings are IP-68 and NEMA-4X.

The default measurement rate is 100 msec (10 Hz), adjustable from 5 msec to 2.8 hours; faster rates limit the maximum target distance and are affected by filter selections. Analog resolution provides 4100 steps over 0-10 VDC and 3279 steps over 0-20 mA, scaled between user-set distance endpoints.

Configuration Options

The ULR30 Series supports multiple simultaneous outputs configurable via OmegaVIEW PC software or a rear TEACH pushbutton (except on serial-only models). Available output configurations include:

• Voltage Output: 0-10 VDC (or custom range), 10 mA max, requiring minimum 15 VDC input for full 10 VDC output.
• Current Loop Outputs: 4-20 mA sourcing or sinking. Load resistance is limited to 450 Ohm @ >15VDC and 250 Ohm max @ 10 VDC; maximum loop resistance is 500 Ohm @ 24 VDC sensor input voltage.
• Solid-State Switches: Two switches, 150 mA, configurable as PNP (@ input voltage) or NPN (external 40 VDC max.). Modes include setpoint or window mode with reversible polarity (NO/NC).
• Serial Data: RS-232 or RS-485 interfaces supporting Modbus slave, ASCII streaming, or SYNCH protocols. Baud rates range from 9600 to 115200. RS-485 models support 2-wire multi-drop addressing (addresses 1-247).

Power supply requirements are 10-30 VDC @ 70 mA max for ULR30/UXLR50, with typical consumption of 45 mA @ 24VDC input +I/O. Serial-only models typically consume 35 mA @ 24VDC.

Mounting options include a dual 1.5 in NPT thread (front and rear) for the ULR30 stainless steel housing. The series also offers UXLR50 variants with clamp mount, rear 1.5 in NPT, or PVC construction with dual 2.5 in NPT threads.

Key Product Differences

The Omega U-Series family includes four primary range models: USR03 (3 ft / 91cm), UMR14 (14 ft / 4.3m), ULR30 (30 ft / 9.1m), and UXLR50 (50 Ft / 15.2m). The ULR30 Series specifically refers to the 30-foot range sensor housed in rugged 316 stainless steel.

Model numbering follows the format [PRODUCT]-[MOUNT]-[SERIAL INTERFACE]. For example, ULR30-15NPT-232 denotes a ULR30 product with a 1.5 in NPT thread mount and RS-232 serial interface; ULR30-15NPT-485 indicates the same configuration with an addressable RS-485 interface.

Differences between series members include transducer frequency (75 kHz for ULR30 vs. 50 kHz for UXLR50), default measurement rates, and output counts. The USR03/UMR14 models offer two outputs on full-featured versions, while the ULR30 and UXLR50 provide five simultaneous outputs: voltage, sourcing current loop, sinking current loop, and two switches.

Serial-only variants are available with reduced cable wire counts (4-wire vs. 9-wire for full output models) but lack switch or analog outputs on the embedded cable. The TEACH pushbutton is unavailable on UXLR50 models and serial-only versions; configuration must be performed via OmegaVIEW software.
