Supported Applications
The ACI Platinum Copper Averaging Series is a multi-point temperature sensor designed for use with electronic controllers in commercial heating and cooling building management systems. The series provides an average temperature reading of the air inside ducts, offering improved accuracy compared to single-point sensors by utilizing a continuous sensing element that covers the entire length of the copper tube.
Documented applications include:
- Rooftop Units
- Air Handlers
- Duct Supply Monitoring
- Duct Discharge Monitoring
- Duct Return Air Monitoring
- Mixed Air Monitoring
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series utilizes a Platinum RTD sensor with a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) curve and a temperature coefficient of 3850 ppm / °C. The sensing element is hermetically sealed to protect against moisture and vibration.
- Measurement Range: -40 to 135°C (-40 to 275°F)
- Sensor Accuracy: +/- 0.1% @ 0°C (32°F); +/- 0.25% @ 21°C (70°F); +/- 1.0% @ 130°C (266°F)
- Response Time: 15 Seconds nominal (63% Step Change)
- Self-Heating / Max Operating Current: 4 mW/°C (Still Air) | 3 mA
- Operating Humidity Range: 10 to 95% RH, non-condensing
- Storage Temperature Range: -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F)
Ambient operating temperature limits vary by enclosure type: Galvanized (GD) and Bell Box (BB) enclosures support -40 to 115°C (-40 to 239°F); Plastic Box (PB) supports -30 to 90°C (-22 to 194°F); NEMA 4X (4X) supports -40 to 70°C (-40 to 158°F).
Configuration Options
The series is configurable across sensor lengths, wire configurations, and enclosure types. The sensing element diameter is 0.210" (5.34mm) nominal copper.
Sensor Lengths & Configuration
- Length Options: 8' (2.44m), 12' (3.66m), 24' (7.31m), 50' (15.24m), 80' (24.39m), and 100' (30.48m)
- Wire Configuration: Two-wire (-2W, Non-Polarity Sensitive) or Three-wire (-3W, Polarity Sensitive). The three-wire option compensates for external lead wire resistance.
Enclosure Options & Ratings
- -GD (Galvanized): Galvanized Steel; NEMA 1 (IP10)
- -PB (Plastic Box): ABS Plastic, UL94-HB, Plenum Rated; NEMA 1 (IP10)
- -BB (Bell Box): Aluminum; NEMA 3R (IP 14)
- -4X: Polystyrene Plastic, UL94-V2; NEMA 4X (IP 66)
Electrical & Materials
- Sensor Output @ 0°C (32°F): 1000 Ohms nominal
- Lead Wires: Etched Teflon (PTFE) Colored Leads, Mil Spec 16878/4 Type E; Silver Plated Copper conductors.
- Fitting Material: Polyamide 66 (High Performance Nylon), UL94-HB
- Foam Pad Material: Neoprene/EPDM/SBR Polymer, UL94-HBF; FMVSS-302; MIL-R-6130C
Certifications & Accessories
- Approvals: RoHS2, WEEE
- NIST Certificate: Available as an option (NIST)
- Accessories: Capillary Mounting Clip, Copper (Item #130525); Universal Plastic Mounting Clips (Items #145421 and #145430).
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between two-wire (-2W) and three-wire (-3W) configurations. The -3W option is specified for use with 3-Wire temperature transmitters or sensor configurations on building management systems or PLCs to compensate for external lead wire resistance.
Enclosure variations define the environmental protection level: Galvanized (GD) and Plastic Box (PB) provide NEMA 1 ratings, while Bell Box (BB) offers NEMA 3R weatherproofing. The -4X enclosure provides NEMA 4X (IP 66) rating for harsher environments but has a lower maximum ambient operating temperature limit (-40 to 70°C).
Model numbers follow the format: A/1K-[2W or 3W]-A-[Length]'-[Enclosure]-(NIST). For example, A/1K-2W-A-8'-GD denotes a two-wire sensor with an 8-foot length and Galvanized enclosure.
