Supported Applications

The ACI MSCTA-40 and MSCTE-40 Series Analog Output Current Sensors are designed for AC current monitoring applications to monitor equipment for proper operation. These split-core sensors facilitate retrofit installations on insulated conductors only, supporting use cases such as load trending, single speed loads, pumps, compressors, fans, preventative maintenance, LEED project justification, and process control.

Important operational constraints include:

  • The MSCT current sensors should not be used in applications with switching power supplies or variable speed drives due to the limited operating frequency range.
  • Applications require a pure sinusoidal AC waveform with little or no distortion/noise on the conductor being monitored.
  • This product is not intended for use in Life / Safety Applications or in Hazardous / Classified locations (environments).

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series provides a measurement range of 0 to 40 A. Accuracy and operating temperature limits vary by model, frequency, and ambient conditions:

  • MSCTA-40 (60 Hz): ±0.75 % FS (±0.3 A) at currents greater than 2 A; Operating Temperature: 5 to 140 °F (-15 to 60 °C).
  • MSCTA-40 (50 Hz): ±0.75 % FS (±0.3 A) at currents greater than 2 A; Operating Temperature: 32 to 140 °F (0 to 60 °C).
  • MSCTE-40 (60 Hz): ±0.4 % FS (±0.16 A) at Full Range for temperatures of 5 to 95 °F (-15 to 35 °C); accuracy is ±0.75 % FS (±0.3 A) at Full Range for -22 to 122 °F (-30 to 50 °C).
  • MSCTE-40 (50 Hz): ±0.75 % FS (±0.3 A) at Full Range; Operating Temperature: -22 to 86 °F (-30 to 30 °C). Note a maximum of 40 °C for 50 Hz operation.

Response times are documented as less than 600 mS (Rise and Fall Times) for the MSCTA-40 and less than 300 mS (Rise and Fall Times) for the MSCTE-40. The sensors operate within a humidity range of 10 to 95 %, non-condensing, with storage temperatures from -40 to 158 °F (-40 to 70 °C).

Configuration Options

The series offers two primary output configurations powered by different methods:

  • A/MSCTA-40 (Loop Powered): Provides a 4 to 20 mA (2-Wire) output. Requires an external power supply of +8.5 to 30 VDC with reverse polarity protection. Specific load conditions require higher voltages: +13.5 to 30 VDC for a 250 Ohm Load (converting to 1-5 VDC) and +18.5 to 30 VDC for a 500 Ohm Load (converting to 2-10 VDC). Maximum load resistance at 24 VDC is 775 Ohms.
  • A/MSCTE-40 (Induced Power): Provides a 0 to 5 VDC output. Does not require external power as it induces power from the monitored conductor; this model requires insulated conductors only.

Mechanical and installation features include:

  • Housing Material: Polycarbonate/ABS Blend (1PC/ABS) with a UL94-V0 enclosure rating.
  • Dimensions: 1.93" (48.99 mm) x 2.18" (55.37 mm) x 1.31" (33.17 mm).
  • Mounting Options: Direct mounting on a 35mm DIN rail, an attachable mounting foot with a Tek screw (foot dimensions: 0.49 in / 12.5 mm x 0.20 in / 5.0 mm), or cable tie anchor feature.
  • Electrical Connection: 2 Position Screw Terminal Block, polarity sensitive.

The series is UL/CUL US Listed (UL 508) Ind. Control Equipment (File # E309723), CE marked, RoHS compliant, UKCA certified, and meets FCC / CAN ICES-3 / NMB-3 standards.

Key Product Differences

The primary distinction between the two models in this series is the output signal type and power source:

  • A/MSCTA-40 (Model 151890): Features a 4 to 20 mA loop-powered output requiring an external DC supply. It supports optional voltage conversion via resistors: Item 100307 (249 Ohm, ±1 %) or Item 100306 (249 Ohm, ±0.1 % for best accuracy) to convert the signal to 1-5 VDC; Item 100469 (499 Ohm, 1 W, ±1 %) converts to 2-10 VDC.
  • A/MSCTE-40 (Model 151889): Features a 0 to 5 VDC output powered by induction from the monitored conductor. It does not require an external power supply but is restricted to insulated conductors and has different temperature-dependent accuracy specifications compared to the MSCTA model.
