Supported Applications
The Omega STM series consists of integrated stepper drives, motors, and controllers designed for motion control applications requiring compact packaging. The system combines a drive, motor, and controller into a single device to reduce space, wiring, and cost compared to conventional solutions. Models support multi-axis operation via the SiNet™ Hub (HUB 444) and are configured using Configurator™ software.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series operates from an external power supply of 12 to 70 Vdc, which is required and sold separately. Ambient operating temperature ranges from -20 to 50°C (-4 to 122°F), with a humidity rating of up to 90% non-condensing when mounted to a suitable heatsink.
Performance specifications vary by model series:
- Torque Output: STM23x-2 Series provides torque up to 125 oz-in; STM23x-3 Series provides torque up to 210 oz-in with a suitable power supply.
- Microstep Resolution: Software selectable from 200 to 51,200 steps/rev in increments of 2 steps/rev.
- Digital Inputs (STEP ±, DIR ±, EN±): Optically isolated, 5 to 24V; minimum pulse width = 250 ns; maximum pulse frequency = 3 MHz.
- Analog Input: Range of 0 to 5 Vdc with 12-bit resolution for speed and position control.
Configuration Options
The STM series offers configurable options across model families, communication interfaces, encoder feedback, and physical dimensions. The controller supports multiple modes of operation including Step and Direction, CW/CCW Pulse, A/B Quadrature, Oscillator (Velocity), Joystick, SCL (Si Command Language), and Hub control.
Key capabilities include:
- Communication Interfaces: RS-232 or RS-485 for "S" models; CANopen DS301/DSP402 available on specific configurations (e.g., STM17C).
- Digital I/O Functions: Configurable inputs include Step, Direction, Enable, Jog CW/CCW, Limit CW/CCW, Start/Stop, and General Purpose. Outputs support Fault, Motion, Tach, or Alarm functions (Optically isolated, 24V, 40 mA max NPN/sinking).
- Advanced Control Features: Anti-resonance/electronic damping to eliminate midrange instability; Torque Ripple Smoothing for the range 0.25 to 1.5 rps; Auto Set-Up for motor parameter measurement and current control configuration; Self-Test diagnostics.
- Encoder Feedback: Optional internal encoder feedback available on models with "E" suffix (e.g., STM23S-2AE).
Physical dimensions vary by model: STM17x-3 length is 81±1 mm (3.19±0.04"); STM23X-2 length 'L' is 92.4 mm (3.63"); STM23X-3 length 'L' is 114.4 mm (4.5"). Mass ranges from 1 lb 14 oz for STM23X-2XX to 2 lb 10 oz for STM23X-3XX.
Key Product Differences
The series is divided into distinct model families based on control architecture and torque capacity:
- S Series (e.g., STM17S, STM23S): Features control options including step/direction, analog input, joystick, and host commands via Si Command Language (SCL). Configurations are saved in FLASH memory on-board the DSP.
- Q Series (e.g., STM17Q, STM23Q): Designed for standalone programmable operation using a text-based programming language. Programs, data, and drive configuration are saved in FLASH and EEPROM memory. Supports stored Q programs and encoder following.
- Torque Variants: Models ending in "-2" (e.g., STM23S-2) offer up to 125 oz-in torque; models ending in "-3" (e.g., STM23S-3) offer up to 210 oz-in torque.
- Interface Variants: Suffixes denote communication type: "N" for RS-232, "R" for RS-485. The "E" suffix indicates the inclusion of an encoder.
