Supported Applications
The Omega SHX and USHX series are ceramic miniature thermocouple connectors designed for high-temperature applications, including use in high vacuum furnaces. These extra heavy-duty connectors feature a one-piece body with a removable cap design intended for fine gage thermocouple wires.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series is rated for an operating temperature range of -29 to 650°C (-20 to 1200°F). The housing material consists of High Purity Alumina. Electrical connections are made via combination Phillips/Slot screws, and the connectors accommodate stranded or solid wire up to 20 AWG.
Physical dimensions for the series include:
- Female connector: Height 26.9 mm (1.06 in), Width 19.1 mm (0.75 in), Depth 9.7 mm (0.38 in)
- Male connector: Height 22.4 mm (0.88 in), Width 19.1 mm (0.75 in), Depth 9.7 mm (0.38 in)
Configuration Options
The SHX series supports multiple thermocouple types and configurations, identified by alloy codes within the model number structure SHX--. Connectors are permanently dot-coded to conform to ANSI and Omega standards.
Thermocouple Types
The series is available for use with the following thermocouple types:
- Type K (ALOMEGA®/CHROMEGA®)
- Type T (Copper-Constantan)
- Type J (Iron-Constantan)
- Type E (CHROMEGA-Constantan)
- Types R/S (Pt/13%Rh-Pt)
- Type G (W-W/26%Re)
- Type C (W/5%Re-W/26%Re)
- Type D (W/3%Re-W/25%Re)
- Type U (Uncompensated, used with Type B thermocouples Pt/6%Rh-Pt/30%Rh)
- Type N (OMEGALLOY®)
Model Configurations
Variants are specified by gender and finish:
- Gender: Specify 'M' for male connector only or 'F' for female connector only.
- Type SHX: Features a glazed color-coded dot.
- Type USHX: Unglazed with a removable color-coding dot, intended for applications sensitive to contamination. To order unglazed connectors, add the prefix 'U' to the model number (e.g., USHX-K-F). No additional cost is applied.
- Compensating Options: Models with an 'I' suffix in the alloy code section indicate specific compensating wire configurations as listed in the ordering guide.
An accessory option includes BB-SMP-CR062-100, a package of 100 crimp style brass bushings for 0.062 Dia. probes.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction between the SHX and USHX models is the presence or absence of glazing on the color-coding dot. Type U (uncompensated) connectors are specifically designated for use with Type B thermocouples, utilizing Copper compensating wire in both positive and negative terminals.

Works as advertised
Connectors work as advertised although being ceramic they crack easily with rough handling.
Note: Strain relief clamps are also needed to facilitate holding the attached cable in place.

Hight temp connector
I like the firm hold on the connectors but did not realize how fragile the cover assembly is. I broke the cover with only moderate tightening of the screws.
I was a little more cautious on the next assembly and it was ok.

Reliable performance at high temperatures
These connectors perform well under environments well above temperatures where plastic connectors fail. Their reliability is critical in our high temperature heat exchanger testing.
