Supported Applications
The Omega 3540 M series consists of dual, bipolar MOSFET H-bridge step motor drivers designed to control stepper motors using pulse width modulation. These drives are engineered for applications requiring precise motion control with selectable microstepping resolutions and automatic idle current reduction.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The 3540 M series operates on a 12-42 VDC input power supply. The amplifiers provide an output current of 0.4 - 3.5 amps/phase, switch selectable in 0.1 A increments, with a maximum output power of 122 watts. Performance is characterized by three-state switching at 20kHz.
The driver features optically isolated inputs for step, direction, and enable signals operating on 5V logic with a sink requirement of 5mA/signal. The minimum pulse width for the step input is 0.5 μsec, and the minimum set up time for the direction signal is 2 μsec. Motor steps occur on the rising edge of the step input.
The unit includes an automatic idle current reduction feature, switch selectable to reduce current to 50% of the setting after one second. The maximum chassis temperature rating is 70° C.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable step resolutions via switches. When used with a 1.8° motor, available microstepping modes include:
- Half step: 400 steps/rev
- 1/5 step: 1000 s/r
- 1/10 step: 2000 s/r
- 1/64 step: 12,800 s/r
Other resolutions up to 12,800 are available to qualified OEMs upon request. The drive includes a switch-selectable self-test function that rotates the motor 1/2 revolution in each direction at 100 steps/second in half-step mode.
Housing and Connections
The driver is mounted on a 1/4 inch thick black anodized aluminum heat transfer chassis. The overall dimensions are 1.5 x 3.0 x 4.0 inches, with a power-on red LED indicator.
Connections utilize European style screw terminal blocks supporting a maximum wire size of AWG 18:
- Motor connection: 4 position (A+, A-, B+, B-)
- Signal Input: 4 position (+5, STEP, DIR, EN)
- DC Input: 2 position (V+, V-)
Certifications and Safety Notes
The series carries the CE Mark, complying with EN55011A and EN50082-1(1992). Installation requires attention to power supply polarity; reverse connection will destroy the driver. The amplifiers generate heat, requiring a properly mounted heat sinking surface with a thermal constant of no more than 4°C/watt for continuous operation at maximum power (above 1 amp). The drive must not be used in spaces without air flow or where surrounding air exceeds 70 °C.
Key Product Differences
The series includes the 3540M and 3540MO variants. Both models share the same dual bipolar MOSFET H-bridge architecture, microstepping capabilities, electrical specifications, and physical chassis design as documented in the user manual.
