Supported Applications
The Omega LVD-800 Series consists of fail-safe dry material rotary paddle level switches designed to monitor the presence and absence of bulk solids in bins, hoppers, silos, and tanks. These devices utilize magnetic sensing technology to detect when a rotating paddle is stalled by material contact, triggering an output signal for high or low-level indication.
Documented applications include granular, pelletized, and powder bulk materials with densities exceeding 80 kg/m³ (5 lb/ft³) for low level detection and over 160 kg/m³ (10 lb/ft³) for high level detection. The series is suitable for a wide range of industrial solids, including feed grains (corn, oats), crushed limestone, wood shavings, rubber granules, tea leaves, peanuts, clays, talcum powder, acrylic resin, wheat flour, Portland cement, silica sand, polypropylene pellets, roasted coffee beans, iron chips, coal, malt, ash, sugar, and sawdust.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The LVD-800 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 65°C (-40 to 150°F). Internal bin temperatures are supported up to 121°C (250°F) for standard units and up to 399°C (750°F) for Hi-Temp models. The unit is rated for a maximum pressure of 30 psi (2 bar).
Power requirements include 115 Vac (±15%); 9 VA; 50/60 Hz or 230 Vac (±15%); 9 VA; 50/60 Hz. A 24 Vdc option is available for the LVD-803 model by adding a suffix. The device features an automatic motor shut-off when the paddle stalls, extending motor life and reducing maintenance.
The enclosure provides NEMA-4 and IP66 ratings with a die-cast aluminum housing finished in powder coating. Electrical entry is provided via two (2) ¾ NPT conduit connections. Ordinary location units include red and green high-intensity LEDs to indicate material sense and unit status conditions.
Hi-Temp Models Cooling Requirements
- < 250°F (121°C): Standard model, no air required.
- 250-500°F (150-260°C): Hi-Temp model, no air required.
- 500-750°F (260-400°C): Hi-Temp model requires 0.5 psig airflow at 2.14 CFM.
Hazardous Location Approvals
The LVD-803-EXP variant is approved for Hazardous Locations: Class I, Div. Groups C, D; and Class II, Div. 1 & 2, Groups E, F, G.
Configuration Options
The series offers extensive configuration options to accommodate various mounting styles, material densities, and environmental conditions. Key configurable elements include:
Paddles (Required)
- LVD-800-1V: 1 Vane insertable for low level control of average weight materials [>320 kg/m³ (20 lb/ft³)] or light to heavy materials in 38 mm (1½") diameter vessels.
- LVD-800-3V: 3 Vane standard for average weight materials [>240 kg/m³ (15 lb/ft³)].
- LVD-800-3VL: 3 Vane large for light weight material [>160 kg/m³ (10 lb/ft³)].
- LVD-800-1VS: 1 Vane insertable scimitar for light to average weight materials.
- LVD-800-2V: 2 Vane for heavy materials [>1200 kg/m³ (75 lb/ft³)] under 1½" in diameter.
- LVD-800-4V: 4 Vane for average to heavy weight materials [>1200 kg/m³ (75 lb/ft³)].
- LVD-800-1VT: 1 Vane triangular for light to average weight material, top down mount only.
- LVD-800-EFC: Ex-flex 3-ply 508 mm (20") belt vane for heavy materials over 51 mm (2") in diameter (top mount only).
Mounting and Extensions
- Flexible Couplings: LVD-800-FC spring flex to absorb side loads.
- Shaft Guards: Galvanized iron (LVD-800-SGGI-6) or stainless steel (LVD-800-SGSS-6), 1¼" pipe, SCH40. Required for solid shaft extensions ≥ 460 mm (18").
- Flexible Cable Extension: LVD-800-FCE, 304SS, 1.98 m (78") max length.
- Solid Shaft Extensions: Galvanized or stainless steel, available in various lengths up to 3.6 m (144").
- Mounting Plates: Carbon steel or 304 stainless steel options for side mount (half coupling) and top mount (full coupling). Heavy duty aluminum plates are also offered.
Key Product Differences
The LVD-800 Series is available in specific model configurations based on power supply and hazardous location requirements:
- LVD-803: Dry level switch, 115 Vac, 1¼ NPT.
- LVD-804: Dry level switch, 230 Vac, 1¼ NPT.
- LVD-803-EXP: Hazardous location model (Class I/II) with 115 Vac power.
Outputs consist of two isolated SPDT contacts: one for Material Sense and one for Unit Status (Fault), rated at 5A @ 250 Vac, 30 Vdc maximum. Wetted materials include 304 stainless steel paddles (except Ex-Flex which uses a rubber/fabric blend belt) and mounting plates available in carbon steel or 304 stainless steel.
