Supported Applications

The 17000, 18000 and 80000 Series are non-indicating temperature controllers built around a slow make and break SPST switch that responds as the external metal shell expands or contracts with each temperature change. They are designed to sense and control the temperature of gas or liquid in pipelines, tanks, or ducts, mounting directly into a threaded opening in a tank, duct, or pipeline.

The 17000/18000 Series is offered in three physical styles to suit different installations:

  • Cartridge type for compact insertion where space is limited.
  • Hex head immersion type with pipe-thread process connections for direct tank, duct, or pipeline mounting.
  • Coupling head immersion type wired with standard male pipe threads.

The 80000 Series is an explosion-resistant version for hazardous locations, supplied with an explosion-resistant junction box and rated for Class I, Group D, and Class II, Group E, F and G, Division 1 and 2 locations. All models are recognized under UL, CSA and FM.

WARNING: Hazard of Fire. These controls function as temperature controls only. Because they do not fail-safe, an approved temperature and/or pressure safety control must be used for safe operation. These switches are not recommended for pilot duty. For all 240 Vac applications, connect a 0.1 µF capacitor across the switch leads.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Across the family, measurement ranges span from -73 to 204°C (-100 to 400°F) on the low-range units up to -73 to 315°C (-100 to 600°F) on the high-temperature units, with a control resolution of 0.1°C (0.1°F). The process operating temperature reaches -73 to 316°C (-100 to 600°F).

Pressure handling is rated at 690 kPa at 120°C (100 psi at 250°F), easing to 415 kPa at 260°C (60 psi at 500°F) as process temperature climbs. Because the sheath expands and contracts directly with the medium, the controls give a fast response to each temperature change.

Wetted materials are brass or stainless steel: brass sheaths are used on the low-range units, while stainless steel is specified for higher-temperature service. Coupling bodies are brass, and the 80000 Series well assembly is Type 321 stainless steel. Process connections use 1/2-14 NPT or 3/4-14 NPT threads on hex head immersion styles and 1/4-14 NPT on the coupling head immersion style.

Configuration Options

Models differ chiefly by how the contact behaves on a temperature rise and by their current rating:

  • Contact operation - a model either opens or closes its contact on temperature rise, letting you select direct heating or cooling control logic.
  • Current rating - standard models carry up to 10 A at 120 V and 5 A at 240 V, while the higher-current models are rated to 25 A at 120 V and 12.5 A at 240 V.
  • Probe size - the shell diameter is 16 mm (0.625 in) on standard-current models and 20 mm (0.81 in) on the higher-current models.

On the 80000 Series, the temperature exposure limit is defined relative to the setpoint - for example 100°F (55°C) above setpoint on the 80016-17000, and 500°F (260°C) above setpoint on the 80016-17021 - so the hazardous-location model can be matched to the expected over-temperature condition.

Key Product Differences

The lineup is organized by construction style and by the 80000 hazardous-location conversion. Model numbers follow the guide <MODEL> - <TEMP RANGE> - <CONTACT OPERATION> for the 17000/18000 Series and 80016-<BASE MODEL> for the 80000 Series.

  • Cartridge type (17000): 17000-0 and 17021-0 cover -73 to 204°C (-100 to 400°F); 17002-0 and 17023-0 cover -73 to 315°C (-100 to 600°F); the higher-current 17052-0 also covers -73 to 315°C (-100 to 600°F). These measure 94 mm (3.72 in) in length.
  • Hex head immersion type (17000): 17100-0, 17121-0, 17102-0 and 17123-0 at 109 mm (4.28 in), plus the higher-current 17152-0 at 119 mm (4.68 in).
  • Coupling head immersion type (18000): 18000-0, 18021-0, 18002-0 and 18023-0, each 118 mm (4.65 in) in length.
  • Hazardous-location (80000): 80016-17000 and 80016-17021 for -74 to 204°C (-100 to 400°F), and 80016-47002 and 80016-47023 for -74 to 260°C (-100 to 500°F), each supplied with the explosion-resistant well and junction box.

Weights range from 32 oz (2 lb) on the cartridge models up to 128 oz (8 lb) on the largest hex head immersion model, letting you match physical size to the mounting point.
