Supported Applications
The Omega EXGG-BX-WIRE series provides extension wires for thermocouple and RTD/thermistor applications. The product line includes non-compensating Type BC (Platinum 6% Rhodium / Platinum 30% Rhodium) duplex wire, compensating Type CX (W5%Re/W26%Re) duplex wire, and Nickel-Plated Copper wires for thermistor and RTD extension.
Operating Conditions & Performance
Maximum operating temperatures vary by insulation material and conductor type. Glass braid insulated BC Extension Wire is rated to 100°C (212°F). PFA, Polyvinyl, and FEP insulated BC wires are also rated to 100°C (212°F). Type CX extension grade wire with Nextel Ceramic or Glass insulation supports up to 200°C (392°F), while PFA-insulated Type CX is similarly rated. Nickel-Plated Copper thermistor and RTD extension wires feature higher temperature ratings depending on the jacket: Glass braid insulated variants are rated to 482°C (900°F); Neoflon PFA insulated wire supports up to 260°C (500°F); and Polyvinyl insulated options support up to 105°C (221°F).
Per ASTM E230, special compensating extension wires are not necessary with Type B over the limited temperature range of 0° C to 50° C. Non-compensated conductors (copper/copper) will not introduce significant error in this range.
Configuration Options
The series offers multiple configurations across insulation types, conductor constructions, and AWG sizes:
- Insulation Materials: Glass braid, PFA (Neoflon), Polyvinyl, FEP, and Nextel Ceramic.
- Conductor Types: Solid conductors or stranded options such as 7 x 34 AWG and 7 x 32 AWG.
- American Wire Gauge (AWG): Available in sizes including 20, 24, and 26 AWG.
- Circuit Configurations: Duplex (Type BC/CX) or multi-conductor Nickel-Plated Copper options with 2, 3, or 4 conductors.
Nominal dimensions vary by model. For example, Glass insulated EXGG-B-20 measures 1.5 x 2.4 mm (0.060 x 0.095 inch), while PFA insulated EXTT-B-26S measures 1.4 x 2.2 mm (0.055 x 0.090 inch). Nextel Ceramic Type CX wire ranges from 2.2 x 3.4 mm to 2.9 x 4.4 mm depending on the braid style.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between three primary product categories based on conductor composition and application:
- Type BC Extension Wire: Copper/Copper duplex wire for non-compensating applications, available with Glass, PFA, Polyvinyl, or FEP insulation.
- Type CX Extension Grade Wire: W5%Re/W26%Re duplex compensating wire offered in Nextel Ceramic (standard braid XC and tight braid XT), Glass, or PFA jackets. Note: Brown PFA jacket with white positive leg and red negative leg is available for specific models.
- Nickel-Plated Copper Wire: Designed for thermistor and RTD extension, offered in 2, 3, or 4 conductor configurations with Glass braid, Neoflon PFA, or Polyvinyl insulation. Color coding varies by configuration (e.g., 2 Cu–Rd/Bk; 3 Cu–Rd/Bk/Bk).
