Supported Applications
The Omega Alpha® Series Rugged Gel-Filled pH and ORP Electrodes (PHE-1300, PHE-1400, PHE-2300) are designed for field and laboratory measurements. The series supports general-purpose applications as well as specialized configurations including test tube electrodes, flat surface measurement, and rugged puncture tips.
Documented application areas include:
- pH and ORP monitoring in meats, cheeses, fruits, and leather (specific to the PHE-2385 model).
- Samples containing interfering ions such as zinc, copper, or sulfide (addressed by double junction models like ORE-1411 and PHE-14xx series).
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Alpha® Series operates within process temperature ranges of 0 to 100 °C (32 to 212 °F) for most epoxy and glass models, while specific Polyethersulfone variants operate from 0 to 80 °C (32 to 176 °F). Measurement capabilities cover pH ranges of 0 to 14, 0 to 13, or 0 to 12 depending on the model suffix and liquid junction type. ORP models support a range of ±2000 mV.
Electrical resistance at 25°C (77°F) varies by construction: epoxy general-purpose electrodes typically exhibit 50 to 80 MΩ, while test tube and specialized configurations may reach up to 200 MΩ. The series utilizes Ag/AgCl reference types.
Physical Dimensions
The series offers a range of physical sizes to accommodate different installation needs:
- Diameter: 6 mm (0.24 in) to 12.5 mm (0.49 in).
- Overall Length: 55 mm (2.2 in) to 300 mm (12.0 in).

Electrical Connections & Accessories
Electrodes are supplied with a BNC connector as standard. A US Standard connector is available by adding the suffix '-U' to the model number for an additional cost. Each unit includes 0.75 to 1 m (2.5 to 3') of cable and an operator's manual.

- PHE-13xx vs. PHE-14xx Series: The 1300-series generally features single liquid junctions (e.g., Polypropylene), while the 1400-series incorporates double liquid junction designs for enhanced performance in samples with interfering ions.
- PHE-2385: A glass electrode featuring a rugged puncture tip specifically designed for solid food products like meats, cheeses, fruits, and leather.
- PHE-1471: An epoxy electrode configured with a flat surface design for measuring samples requiring double HDPE liquid junctions.
- PHE-2300 Series (PHE-1335): Extended length test tube electrodes (300 mm / 12.0 in) designed for extra long test tubes with Annular Ceramic liquid junctions.
- ORE-Series: Dedicated ORP models (e.g., ORE-1311, ORE-1411) offering a ±2000 mV range; the ORE-1411 includes a double Polypropylene liquid junction for samples with zinc, copper, or sulfide.
- Material Variants: PHE-1317 and PHE-1417 utilize Polyethersulfone construction. The PHE-1304 is an epoxy electrode with a double Annular PTFE liquid junction operating up to 80 °C (176 °F).
