Supported Applications

The Omega LDC series consists of Low Density Cartridge Heaters designed for applications requiring lower operating temperatures and watt densities. Documented uses include heat sealing, laminating, packaging, labeling, molds, food processing, refrigeration, shoe machinery, glue guns, wax pots, heating liquids, and heating gases.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The LDC series features an Alloy 304 stainless steel sheath with a helically wound Nickel-Chrome resistance wire and high-purity Magnesium Oxide (MgO) ceramic insulator. The heaters are rated for operation up to 650°C (1200°F). Maximum watt density ranges from 3.1 to 7.0 Watt/cm² (20 to 45 Watt/in²), depending on heater size and operating temperature.

Electrical specifications vary by diameter: diameters from 3/16" to 1/2" support a maximum voltage of 240V, while diameters from 5/8" to 1 1/4" support up to 480V. Wattage tolerance is specified as Plus 5%, minus 10% for the 3/16" diameter; resistance tolerance is listed as Plus 10%, minus 5%. Length tolerances are 1.59 mm (±1/16") for lengths up to 152 mm (6") and 3.18 mm (±1/8") for lengths over 152 mm (6"). Camber tolerance is 0.254 mm (0.010") per foot of length.

Configuration Options

The series offers a range of nominal diameters from 3/16" to 1 1/4" and sheath lengths from 76.2 mm to 609.6 mm (3" to 24"). Standard configurations include Type F termination with 254 mm (10") internally connected flexible lead wires featuring high-temperature insulation, UL approved for 300 or 600V service and temperature rated to 250°C (482°F). Ceramic end caps are standard.

Available options include:

  • Voltage Options: Standard model numbers cover 120V and 240V AC; 480V is applicable for diameters of 5/8" and larger (contact OMEGA for details).
  • Termination Styles: Over 40 standard termination styles are available to meet specific application requirements.
  • Approvals: The heaters are UL recognized and CSA certified under UL File Number E65652 and CSA File Number 043099. Specify when ordering if Agency Approval is required.

Note: For immersion heating of corrosive solutions, contact OMEGA for specific configurations.

Key Product Differences

The LDC series model numbers follow the format LDC - Model Number - Voltage - Sheath Length. Specific variations are defined by diameter and length combinations which determine maximum voltage, amperage, and wattage. For example, a 3/16" diameter heater is limited to 240V and 1.5A, whereas a 1 1/4" diameter supports up to 480V and 30A.

Model numbers provided in the series documentation correspond to low density cartridge heaters terminated with Type F flexible leads that are 254 mm (10") long. Variations exist for different wattage outputs at specific lengths; for instance, a sheath length of 273.1 mm (10 3/4") is available in both 600W and 850W configurations.
