Supported Applications

The Omega HHC230 is a pocket-sized handheld light meter designed for measuring light intensity in units of lux and foot-candles (fc). The device features a CIE photopic spectral response, selectable measurement units, backlighting, and multiple operation modes including Measurement, Set, and Hold. It is utilized to verify illumination levels across various environments documented in the series manual.

Reference tables within the documentation provide typical lux ranges for specific settings:

  • General Office: Design rooms (2000–1500 lux), lobbies and stores (1500–750 lux), meeting rooms and restaurants (750–300 lux).
  • Hospitality: Hotel check-in desks (1500–750 lux), kitchens (750–300 lux), elevators (75–30 lux).
  • Industrial & Factory: Precision working and design areas (3000–1500 lux), packing halls (750–300 lux), warehouses (75–30 lux).
  • Hospital: Vision examination rooms (10,000–5,000 lux), operating rooms (1500–750 lux), waiting rooms (300–150 lux).
  • Schools & Education: Computer rooms (1500–300 lux), classrooms and laboratories (750–200 lux), indoor stadiums (750–200 lux).
  • Housing: Study desks and make-up areas (750–300 lux), living rooms and entrances (300–150 lux), balconies and porches (70–30 lux).

Operating Conditions & Performance

The HHC230 operates within an ambient temperature range of 0°C to 50°C at less than 70% relative humidity. Storage is permitted from -20°C to 50°C with a humidity rating of 0 to 80% R.H., provided the battery is removed from the meter.

Performance specifications for light intensity measurement include:

  • Measurement Range: 0 to 200,000 lux and 0 to 18,580 fc.
  • Resolution: 1 lux (0 to 19,999), 10 lux (20,000 to 200,000), and 1 fc (0 to 18,580).
  • Spectral Response: CIE photopic with a spectral angle f'1 < 8%.
  • Acceptance Angle: Cosine corrected at 150° with an acceptance error f'2 < 2%.
  • Total Accuracy: ±(3%rdg + 10dgt) for CIE standard illuminant A (2856K).
  • Accuracy Conditions: Stated accuracy applies at 23°C±5°C and <70% R.H.
  • Temperature Coefficient: 0.1 times the applicable accuracy specification per °C out of 23°C±5°C.
  • Measurement Rate: 1 time/second.

Configuration Options

The series is configured as a handheld unit with specific physical and power characteristics. The device includes safety features such as low battery indication, where the display shows an icon when voltage drops below operating levels or replacement is needed.

  • Housing & Dimensions: 24.7mm (T) x 50.9mm (W) x 132.9 mm (H).
  • Weight: Approximately 116g including batteries.
  • Power Supply: Two 1.5V AAA size batteries; typical battery life is 180 hours.
  • Sensor Protection: Features a plastic domed cosine corrector that must be kept clean and free of scratches (cleanable with soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol).

Key Product Differences

The HHC230-Meter series code encompasses the Omega HHC230 model. The documentation also references related models in the broader handheld environmental meter family, including temperature (HHC201), pressure (HHC280/HHC281), RPM/light (HHC250), and air flow/humidity devices. While these share similar ruggedized housings with rubber bumpers and covers, the HHC230 is specifically dedicated to light intensity measurement.

Distinct from other models in the family manual which may include thermocouples or reflective tape as accessories, the HHC230 focuses on lux/fc readings. The series supports CE and UKCA certifications. Users are advised that when measuring light received from many directions simultaneously, care must be taken to avoid reflections or shadowing the sensor with their body.
