Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 8B is a microprocessor-based temperature and process loop controller designed for mounting in enclosed panels. It provides advanced control features including PID, ON/OFF, manual, or programmable Ramp/Soak (PID) control modes. The series supports universal input configurations to monitor thermocouples, RTDs, DC voltages, or DC currents.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series 8B operates within an ambient temperature range of 32 to 122°F (0 to 50°C). It features a front panel rating of IP56 and complies with CE and cULus certifications. The controller displays process value (PV) in red and set point (SV) in green on dual 4-digit, 7-segment LED indicators.

Measurement accuracy is specified as ±0.25% span, ±1 least significant digit. Input ranges vary by sensor type:

  • K Type TC: -328 to 2372°F (-200 to 1300°C)
  • J Type TC: -148 to 2192°F (-100 to 1200°C)
  • T Type TC: -328 to 752°F (-200 to 400°C)
  • E Type TC: 32 to 1112°F (0 to 600°C)
  • W Type TC: -328 to 2372°F (-200 to 1300°C)
  • R Type TC: 32 to 3092°F (0 to 1700°C)
  • S Type TC: 32 to 3092°F (0 to 1700°C)
  • B Type TC: 212 to 3272°F (100 to 1800°C)
  • L Type TC: -328 to 1562°F (-200 to 850°C)
  • U Type TC: -328 to 932°F (-200 to 500°C)

  • Pt 100 RTD: -328 to 1562°F (-200 to 850°C)
  • Analog Inputs (0-5 V, 0-10 V, 0-20 mA*, 4-20 mA*, 0-650 mV): -999 to 9999

*Requires a 250 Ω precision resistor across input terminals.

Configuration Options

The Series 8B is available in multiple configurations defined by supply power and dual output types. The series supports the following capabilities:

  • Housing Size: 1/8 DIN (47.80 mm width, 98.20 mm height, 79.20 mm depth).
  • Power Supply: Standard models accept 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz; optional low-voltage (-LV) variants support 24 VDC.
  • Dual Outputs: Configurable combinations of Relay, Voltage Pulse (14 VDC), Current (4-20 mA), or Linear Voltage (0-10 V).
  • Relay Ratings: SPDT contact configuration rated at 5 A @ 250 VAC resistive.
  • Voltage Pulse Output: 14 VDC with a maximum output current of 40 mA.
  • Current Output: 4-20 mA DC.
  • Linear Voltage Output: 0-10 V DC (available on specific model codes).
  • Communication: RS-485 interface supporting Modbus® ASCII/RTU protocol.

Key Product Differences

The Series 8B product line is distinguished by its output configuration and power supply options, identified in the model number (e.g., 8B-23, 8B-53-LV). Key distinctions include:

  • Output Combinations: Models are configured with two distinct outputs. Common pairings include Voltage Pulse/Relay, Relay/Relay, Current/Relay, and Linear Voltage/Relay.
  • Power Supply Variants: Standard models operate on 100-240 VAC; variants suffixed with "-LV" are designed for 24 VDC operation.
  • Accessories: The series supports optional accessories including a 250 Ω precision resistor (A-277), R/C snubber assembly (A-600) to protect relay outputs when driving contactors or solenoids, weatherproof enclosures (A-900/A-901), and configuration software.
