Supported Applications

The DVU Series Vari-Angle® digital thermometers and transmitters are self-indicating temperature instruments from Weiss Instruments, engineered as a mercury-free, direct replacement for industrial mercury-in-glass thermometers. Their patented adjustable joint lets the display swivel to a readable angle regardless of how the thermowell is oriented, which makes them ideal for hydronic systems, HVAC equipment, and building automation where gauges are often mounted in awkward positions.

Designed strictly for thermowell connections, the series reads process temperature at pumps, boilers, chillers, and piping without breaking into the fluid. The digital thermometer models are self-powered by ambient light, while the DVUT transmitter models add a loop-powered 4-20mA output so the same local reading can also be sent to a controller, PLC, or building management system for remote monitoring.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Every DVU instrument measures over a standard range of -50 to 300°F (-45 to 150°C) with an F/C switchable display, holding accuracy to the greater of 1% of reading or 1°F. Readings resolve to one-tenth of a degree between -19.9 and 199.9°F, and the display updates every 10 seconds from a glass-passivated NTC thermistor sensor. Recalibration is available through a case potentiometer.

The instruments operate across an ambient range of -30 to 140°F (-35 to 60°C) at up to 100% humidity, with zero ambient temperature error. The stem is precision die-cast Zamac alloy — with a brass extension on 6" and longer stems — while the case, adjustable joint, and connecting thread are molded from hi-impact ABS. The DVUT transmitter is loop powered from 8 to 35 VDC, drives a 4-20mA signal with a load capability of 775Ω at a 24VDC supply, and adds output accuracy of 0.1% of span.

Configuration Options

The DVU Series splits into two capability lines that share the same Vari-Angle body, range, and thermowell mounting but differ in how the reading is delivered:

DVU digital thermometers — self-powered, fully light-powered local indicators that need no wiring or battery, giving a maintenance-free digital replacement for glass thermometers.
DVUT self-indicating transmitters — combine the same local digital display with a loop-powered 4-20mA transmitter, providing both an at-a-glance reading and a remote signal from one device.

Within each line, models differ by stem length to match the insertion depth of the thermowell, and dedicated air-duct-stem versions are offered for HVAC duct sensing. Because both lines are built for thermowell connections only, the choice between them is driven by whether a remote output is required, not by any change in the sensing element.
