Supported Applications
The Omega SGD Series Precision Strain Gages are designed for static and dynamic strain measurement applications. These linear pattern gages measure strain in a single direction, indicated by an arrow on the pattern showing the principal stress direction. They are commonly used in experimental stress analysis.
- Stress concentration or high gradient areas (miniature linear patterns)
- Inhomogeneous materials (extra-long grid options available)
Operating Conditions & Performance
The measuring grid is formed by etching constantan foil and sealed in a polyimide film carrier. The gages are described as very flexible, mechanically strong, with a small bending radius, operating over a broad temperature range.
Maximum permitted bridge energizing voltage (Vrms) varies by model configuration:
- Ranges from 2.5 Vrms to 75 Vrms depending on gage pattern and resistance
Dimensions Key
The specification sheet defines the following dimension parameters for each model:
- A: Active gage length
- B: Active gage width
- C: Matrix (carrier) length
- D: Matrix (carrier) width
Configuration Options
The series offers a wide range of configurations defined by the model number guide format: SGD-<GAGE_PATTERN>-<RESISTANCE>-<TERMINATION>-<TEMP_COMP>.
Gage Patterns and Sizes
- Miniature linear patterns for stress concentration or high gradient areas
- Wide or narrow grid patterns
- Small, medium, or large pattern sizes (e.g., 1.5 mm to 150 mm active lengths)
Nominal Resistance Options
The series supports the following nominal resistance values as listed in the specification tables:
- 120 Ω
- 240 Ω (specific models, e.g., SGD-150/240-LY40)
- 350 Ω
- 1000 Ω
Termination Types
Gages are available with two electrical connection methods:
- Ribbon Leads: Standard termination for many models.
- Solder Pads: Available on specific patterns, often paired with Bondable Terminal Pads (BTP) options such as BTP-1 through BTP-6 depending on the model size and pattern.
Temperature Compensation
The series offers temperature compensation for:
- Steel (ST)
- Aluminum (AL)
- Uncompensated (UNC): Available on specific extra-long models such as SGD-30/120-LY40 and SGD-50/120-LY40.
Special Service Options
The series includes "Extra-Long For Inhomogeneous Material" configurations with extended active lengths (e.g., 25.00 mm, 30.00 mm, 50.00 mm, and 150.00 mm). Custom-designed strain gages are available without minimum quantities upon consultation with engineering.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the SGD Series differ primarily by active grid dimensions (A x B), carrier size (C x D), nominal resistance, and termination style. The model number explicitly identifies these parameters; for example, a "LY11" suffix indicates 120 Ω with Ribbon Leads and Steel compensation, while "LY43" typically denotes Solder Pads with Aluminum compensation.
Clear alignment marks are included on the gage pattern to assist in installation. The carrier or matrix material may be trimmed in the field on all sides within 0.25 mm of the foil grid without affecting strain gage performance.
