Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 40T2 is a digital temperature controller designed for on-off control applications. It accepts RTD, thermocouple, thermistor, current, or voltage inputs to manage set points up to 999°F/537°C. The unit features a built-in buzzer and alarm functionality that flashes when the current temperature exceeds preset limits. Communication capabilities include a TTL slave port supporting the Modbus® protocol over a TTL/RS-485 interface, suitable for programming or Building Management System (BMS) integration.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series 40T2 operates within an ambient temperature range of 23 to 131°F (-5 to 55°C) and a humidity rating of 10-90% RH non-condensing. Storage conditions are specified as -13 to 158°F (-25 to 70°C). The controller provides an accuracy of ±2°F (1°C) across its supported sensor types. Measurement ranges vary by input configuration: PTC probes cover -58 to 302°F (-50 to 150°C); NTC probes span -40 to 230°F (-40 to 110°C); PT100 and PT1000 probes range from -148 to 999°F (-100 to 550°C); Ni120 probes cover -112 to 572°F (-80 to 300°C); and J or K thermocouples support -130 to 999°F (-90 to 700°C). The front panel carries an IP65 rating.

Configuration Options

The series supports multiple power supply configurations depending on the model suffix: 115 VAC, 230 VAC (both 50/60 Hz), or 12-24 VAC/DC. Electrical connections utilize fixed and plug-in screw terminal blocks for wires up to 14 AWG (2.5 mm²) and a picoblade connector.

Key configurable features include:

  • Sensor Inputs: Configurable current (0-20 mA/4-20 mA), voltage (0-10 V/2-10 V), PTC, NTC, PT100, PT1000, Ni120, J T/C, and K T/C.
  • Outputs: Relay contact output rated at 16 A in-rush res. @ 250 VAC (SPDT, type 1).
  • Digital Input: One multipurpose dry contact input (3.3 V, 1 mA), available when not configured for Pt 100, Pt 1000, or Ni 120 3-wire inputs.
  • Display & Control: 3-digit multi-color LED display with field-selectable °F or °C units. Supports heating and cooling operation modes via parameter settings.
  • Communication: TTL/RS-485 interface for Modbus® protocol programming; the 40X2-K programming key is available to reduce setup time when configuring multiple units.

The unit weighs 2.3 oz (65 g) and has overall dimensions of 2-15/16 in [75 mm] width, 1-5/16 in [33 mm] height, and a depth of 2-5/16 in [59 mm].

Key Product Differences

The Series 40T2 is distinguished from the broader family by its specific upper display limit of 999°F (noted as limited by the 3-digit display) and inclusion of Modbus® communication. Power supply variations are indicated in the model number: -10 denotes 115 VAC, -20 indicates 230 VAC, and -40 specifies 12-24 VAC/DC operation.
