Supported Applications

The Omega FMA Series comprises stainless steel gas mass flowmeters and controllers designed for clean gases. Utilizing capillary-type thermal technology, these instruments directly measure mass flow without requiring temperature, pressure, or square root corrections. The series is documented as suitable for laboratory, test applications, OEM integration, and process control environments.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The FMA Series operates within an ambient gas temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F). Measurement accuracy is specified as ±1% of full scale including linearity, with repeatability of ±0.15% full scale or better. The series supports a turndown ratio of 100:1 and features a response time of 5 seconds per the specification table.

Pressure performance includes a maximum gas pressure rating of 500 psig. Minimum upstream pressure requirements vary by configuration: meters require 1 inch of H2O; controllers up to 1 SLM require 1 psi, while controllers greater than 20 SLM require 20 psi. Differential pressure for mass flow controllers is listed as 5 to 50 psi standard for ranges less than 5 SLM and 20 to 40 psi standard for ranges greater than 5 SLM.

Leak integrity is rated at 1 x 10⁻⁶ cc/min of He or better. Temperature coefficient performance is 0.05% full scale per 1°C or better, and pressure coefficient is 0.01% full scale per psi or better.

Configuration Options

The series offers a comprehensive range of measurement spans from 10 SCCM to 20 SLM. Configurations include mass flowmeters (FMA2700/FMA2800 Series) and mass flow controllers (FMA3700/FMA3800 Series). Key configurable attributes documented for the series include:

  • Display Options: Models are available with an onboard LCD display or without a display.
  • Output Signals: Linear 0 to 5 Vdc or 4 to 20 mA outputs. Engineering units may be mass (e.g., Gr/s, LB/H) or volumetric referenced to standard conditions (SCCM, SLPM, SCFH).
  • Control Features: Controllers utilize an integral inline electromagnetic proportional valve (normally closed). Command signals are supplied via onboard set point potentiometer or external 0-5 VDC input.
  • Power Supply: Standard supply is 24 Vdc @ 150 mA for meters and 300 mA for controllers. Optional power includes 115 Vac or 220 Vac with AC adaptor (Meters); optional 12, 15 VDC / 115, 220 VAC configurations are noted in family documentation.
  • Connections: Electrical connection is via a 9-pin sub-D connector. Process connections utilize ¼" compression fittings.
  • Wetted Materials: Flow bodies consist of 316 and 17-4 Stainless Steel with FKM O-rings (standard). Optional elastomers include Buna, Perfluoroelastomer, or EPDM. Users are responsible for verifying gas compatibility against wetted materials.
  • Housing: Constructed from stainless steel with dimensions of 152.4 H x 83.5 W x 25.4 mm D (6.00 x 3.29 x 1.00").

The series is calibrated to NIST standards for a specific gas and range selected by the customer; K Factors can be used to measure other gases.

Key Product Differences

The FMA Series distinguishes between flowmeters and controllers, as well as display configurations. The model numbering convention identifies these variations:

  • FMA270x / FMA370x: Models with onboard LCD displays.
  • FMA280x / FMA380x: Models without onboard displays.

The "flow-through" design provides zero dead space. Accessories include the FMA-200PWA replacement socket plug-in power supply for 90 to 260 Vac, which includes a 5-point NIST calibration certificate; adding the suffix “-NIST10” upgrades this to a 10-point certificate.
