Supported Applications

The Omega RTDCAP Series Platinum RTD Capsules are ready-to-use sensors designed for reliable rugged embedment, insertion, or probe assembly. These encapsulated elements feature insulated lead wires welded and anchored internally to provide a compact sensing solution.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series utilizes International grade thin film platinum sensing elements with an alpha coefficient of 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C per IEC 60751. Interchangeability and accuracy are rated Class A (±0.15+0.002*|t|°C) between -50 and 300°C, with Class B accuracy above and below these temperatures.

Operating temperature ranges vary by lead material:

  • -200 to 260°C (-320 to 500°F) for TFE leads
  • -200 to 350°C (-320 to 660°F) for Polyimide leads
  • -75 to 510°C (-100 to 950°F) for Fiberglass leads
  • -50 to 200°C (-60 to 390°F) for Moisture Resistant models

Standard sensors and encapsulation materials are rated up to 540°C (1000°F). Time constants in water at 3/Second range from 0.5 seconds for the 0.086 diameter capsule to 1.5 seconds for the 0.187 diameter.

Configuration Options

The RTDCAP series is configurable across resistance, wire count, dimensions, and materials:

  • Sensing Element Resistance: Available in 100 Ω or 1 kΩ (Ice Point: 100.00±0.06Ω or 1000.0±0.6Ω at 0°C).
  • Wire Configurations: Offered in 2-, 3-, or 4-wire configurations.
  • Diameters and Lengths: Tip diameters range from 0.086 to 0.125 inches with standard lead lengths of 1 m (40").
  • Housing Materials: Alumina, Polyimide, or Fiberglass encapsulation.
  • Lead Insulations: Nickel-Coated Copper insulated with 28 AWG Fiberglass, TFE, or Polyimide.
  • Special Options: Moisture-resistant models feature a 300 psi seal and are available in specific configurations.

Electrical connections consist of insulated lead wires welded and anchored internally. The series supports self-heating applications with maximum currents of 5 mA for 100 Ω elements and 2 mA for 1 kΩ elements, while recommended current for temperature sensing is 1 mA maximum.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the RTDCAP series are distinguished by their specific combination of resistance value (100A vs. 1KA), wire count (indicated in model codes as -1-, -2-, or -3- for 2, 3, and 4-wire respectively), capsule diameter (e.g., A086, P098, A125), lead material type (K for Polyimide/Kapton®, T for TFE/PTFE, F for Fiberglass), and length code. Note that 3- and 4-wire sensors can be modified by the customer for 2- and 3-wire applications by cutting off unneeded lead wires.
