Supported Applications

The Omega PHE Series comprises glass-bodied and refillable combination pH electrodes designed for general laboratory measurements, surface/subsurface applications, and use in narrow vessels. The series supports measurement of aqueous and non-aqueous solutions, including samples with very low or very high ionic strength, greases, oils, and biological solutions containing TRIS or large amounts of protein.

Specific electrode configurations address distinct sample types:

  • Semi-soft materials such as meats, cheese, dairy products, photographic emulsions, and electrophoresis gels
  • Surface measurements using flat-surface electrodes (PHE-1525)
  • Subsurface or solid-sample penetration using spear-point electrodes (PHE-1526)
  • Laboratory reference applications with single-junction (PHE-3216) and double-junction (PHE-3216D) designs

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series operates within a process temperature range of -5 to 100°C (23 to 212°F). Measurement capability spans the full pH scale from 0 to 14 pH with an accuracy class of ±0.02 pH.

Response performance is documented as reaching 95% of reading within 5 seconds, stabilizing in 30 seconds. Wetted materials include glass bodies, polymer bodies (for specific models), PTFE liquid junctions, ceramic liquid junctions, and saturated potassium chloride-silver reference cells.

Configuration Options

The series offers multiple housing styles and sensor configurations to accommodate different installation needs. Standard electrical connection includes a 1 m (3') cable length; additional lengths are available by consulting Engineering.

Housing and Sensor Types:

  • General-purpose glass-bodied refillable combination electrodes: PHE-1478, PHE-1479
  • Flat-surface pH electrode with polymer body: PHE-1525
  • Spear-point pH electrode: PHE-1526
  • Laboratory reference electrodes (single and double junction): PHE-3216, PHE-3216D
  • Insertable laboratory electrodes with 5.0" insertion length or sealed polymer bodies: PHE-1523, PHE-1524

Liquid Junction Options:

  • Porous PTFE liquid junction (PHE-1478)
  • Ceramic liquid junction with saturated potassium chloride electrolyte (PHE-1479)
  • Replaceable porous PTFE liquid junction (PHE-3216)

Configurable Suffix Options:

The series supports the following suffix options for specific models: -D (Double junction), -HF (HF fluoride resistant body), -HT (High-temperature reference), -HPH (High-pH glass), and -ORP (Redox measurement).

Key Product Differences

Differences within the series are defined by physical geometry, liquid junction material, and specialized service options.

  • PHE-1478 vs. PHE-1479: The PHE-1478 features a porous PTFE liquid junction, while the PHE-1479 utilizes a ceramic liquid junction with saturated potassium chloride electrolyte.
  • PHE-1523 vs. PHE-1524: The PHE-1523 is a glass-body refillable combination electrode with a 5.0" insertion length, whereas the PHE-1524 is a sealed polymer-bodied electrode measuring 254 mm (10") long.
  • PHE-3216 vs. PHE-3216D: The PHE-3216 is a single-junction pH electrode, while the PHE-3216D incorporates a double junction with potassium nitrate as the screening electrolyte.
  • PHE-1525 vs. PHE-1526: The PHE-1525 is designed for flat-surface measurements, while the PHE-1526 features a spear-point design.
