Supported Applications
The Omega TQ514 series comprises digital, shaft-to-shaft rotary torque sensors designed for measuring the performance of electric drive motors, small DC motors, clutches, and fans. These non-contact sensors utilize a Full Wheatstone Bridge to transmit signals without slip rings, supporting quiet operation at high speeds up to 10,000 RPM.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The TQ514 series operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F), with a compensated temperature span from 21 to 76°C (70 to 170°F). Thermal effects on zero and span are specified at 0.0036% FS/°C. The sensors feature an isolated ±5 Vdc output signal, sampled at 20,000 samples per second with a bandwidth of dc to 1 kHz.
Performance specifications include linearity of 0.10% FS and hysteresis of 0.10% FS. Zero balance is rated at 1.0% FS. The series supports an overload capacity of 150% FS. Power requirements are met with a supply voltage of 12 to 15 Vdc, drawing up to 350 mA.
Configuration Options
The TQ514 line offers capacities ranging from 50 in-oz (TQ514-003) through 2000 in-lb (TQ514-2K), covering the range of 0 to 3 in-lb up to 0 to 2000 in-lb, or equivalently 0.35 to 226 N-M.
Key configurable features and options include:
- Sensor Elements & Materials: Models below 100 in-lb utilize stainless steel shafts with aluminum sensors; models of 100 in-lb and above feature steel shafts and sensors.
- Shaft Configurations: Lower capacity units (50 to 1000 in-oz) use a .375" diameter shaft with flats. Higher capacities range from .749" to .999" diameters, available with key widths of .1875", .25", or flat configurations.
- Electrical Connection: A 10-pin twist lock connector (PT02E-12-10P) provides power input, torque signal output (+SIG/-SIG), and encoder signals. The pinout supports shunt calibration inputs.
- Optional Encoder: An integral 512 ppr optical encoder is available via the -EN512 suffix for angle or speed measurement.
- Mechanical Options: A foot mounting bracket (-MB) is offered as an accessory option.
The series includes a digital non-contact design with ball bearing-supported shafts. For TQ514-003 and -006 units, oiled bearings require maintenance (a drop of high-quality light machine oil every 360 hours), while all other capacities feature permanently lubricated bearings.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the TQ514 series are distinguished primarily by torque capacity and corresponding shaft dimensions. The model numbering follows the pattern TQ514-, with examples including TQ514-003 (50 in-oz), TQ514-1K (1000 in-lb), and TQ514-2K (2000 in-lb). The series supports optional suffixes for specific configurations, such as TQ514--EN512 to denote the inclusion of an optical encoder.
Differences in extraneous load coefficients and torsional spring rates are documented per model capacity. For instance, the Torsional Spring Rate ranges from 182 in-lb/RAD for the 50 in-oz unit up to 378,000 in-lb/RAD for the 2000 in-lb unit. Maximum stress limits (σ max) vary by capacity group: 18,000 psi for units under 100 in-lb and 84,000 psi for units of 100 in-lb or greater.
