Supported Applications
The Omega MDSi8 and MDSSi8 series are benchtop digital thermometers designed for single-channel (10-point) or ten-channel monitoring. These universal instruments handle temperature inputs from common thermocouple types, multiple RTD configurations, as well as process voltage and current signals. The ¼ DIN size meters feature a rugged metal enclosure suitable for laboratory benches or industrial control panels where large-format display visibility is required.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series supports measurement ranges spanning from -50 to 40°C/40 to 1768°C up to high-temperature thermocouple limits such as 0 to 2320°C/32 to 4208°F for Type B inputs. Accuracy specifications vary by input type: process voltage and current ranges offer ±0.03% reading accuracy, while temperature measurements range from ±0.4°C (±0.7°F) for Types J, L, C, RTD, and N, to ±1.0°C/±1.8°F or ±1.0°C/±0.5°C depending on the thermocouple type.
Resolution is 1° or 0.1° for temperature inputs and 10 μV for process signals. The response time is specified as 0.7 s for 99.9% of a step change. Power requirements are universal at 90 to 240 Vac, 50 to 60 Hz.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable models based on channel count and input type:
- MDSi8 / MDSi8A: Single-channel benchtop thermometers with universal inputs (thermocouple, RTD, process voltage/current). The 'A' suffix indicates inclusion of an analog output.
- MDSi8S: A dedicated single-channel strain meter variant.
- MDSSi8-TC / MDSSi8A-TC: Ten-channel models with dedicated thermocouple inputs; 'A' adds analog output capability.
- MDSSi8-RTD / MDSSi8A-RTD: Ten-channel models configured for 100 Ω RTD inputs, with optional configuration for 500 or 1000 Ω RTDs on ten-channel units only.
- MDSSi8-PV / MDSSi8A-PV: Ten-channel process meters dedicated to voltage and current inputs.
Communication and control options include isolated RS232/RS485-422 serial ports, Ethernet with an embedded web server (not available on 'A' models), and dual alarm relays rated at 3 A @ 120/240 Vac. Analog outputs provide 0 to 10 Vdc or 0 to 20 mA signals.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction between the MDSi8 and MDSSi8 families is channel capacity: single-channel versus ten-channel dedicated inputs. Within each family, models are differentiated by input type (universal vs. thermocouple/RTD/process) and output features.
- Analog Output: Models with the 'A' suffix include an isolated programmable analog output; these units do not support Ethernet options.
- Communication Options: The '-C24' option provides RS232/RS485-422, while '-EIT' adds Ethernet connectivity. A combined '-C4EIT' option is available for both serial and network communication on compatible models.
- Alarm Relays: The '-AL' suffix denotes dual form 'C' SPDT alarm relays.
The series includes a 5-year warranty and carries UL, cUL, and RoHS 2 Compliant certifications. Power cords are available for North America (120 Vac), Continental Europe, UK, Italy/Ireland, Denmark, or stripped ends for global installation up to 250 Vac.
