Supported Applications

The Dwyer Model SM-100 Digital Sound Meter is designed for measuring noise levels in various environments. The product overview identifies the unit as suitable for safety engineers, health and industrial safety offices, and quality control applications. Documented use cases include technicians measuring sound levels in zones or rooms of buildings, musical halls, theaters, and near equipment or machinery on the plant floor.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Model SM-100 conforms to IEC651 Type 2 and ANSI S1.4 Type 2 standards (per manual) and CE approval (per data sheet). It features a frequency range of 31.5 Hz to 8 kHz with an accuracy of ±1.5 dB at 94 dB @ 1 kHz. The instrument utilizes a 1/2 inch electret condenser microphone.

Measurement ranges are defined by weighting type: A Weighting covers 30 to 130 dB, while C Weighting covers 35 to 130 dB. An Auto Range mode supports 30 ~ 130 dB. The display resolution is 0.1 dB with a dynamic range of 50 dB.

Response time options include FAST (125 mS) and SLOW (1 sec). When set to fast response, the four-digit LCD updates in 0.5 seconds. Operating conditions require temperatures between 41 to 104°F (5 to 40°C) with humidity below 80% RH. Storage limits are -10 to 60°C (14 to 140°F) at humidity below 70% RH. The maximum operating elevation is 2000 m (6562 ft).

  • Power Supply: 9 V alkaline battery (NEDA 1604, IEC 6F22, JIS 006P), included.
  • Battery Life: Approximately 50 hours with an alkaline battery.
  • Dimensions: 7.8" L x 2.1" W x 1.5" H (200 mm L x 55 mm W x 38 mm H).
  • Weight: About 6 oz (170 g) including battery.

Configuration Options

The Model SM-100 series includes specific functional features and optional accessories to support field operations. The unit offers MAX/MIN record capabilities, a data hold function that freezes the display reading, auto ranging, and an auto power-off feature.

Available Options & Accessories

  • Windscreen: Recommended for use when wind speed exceeds 10 m/sec to prevent extraneous noise caused by air blowing across the microphone.
  • Acoustic Calibrator: Available as a separate accessory (94 dB, 1 kHz Sine wave).

The standard package includes a carrying case and a black foam cover to protect the sensor. The manual recommends recalibration every year or before operation if the unit has not been used for a long time or operated in harsh environments.

Key Product Differences

The Model SM-100 is offered as a single configuration with fixed measurement ranges and response settings selectable via user interface. The series does not list alternative housing materials, process connections, or electrical output signals beyond the internal LCD display and battery operation.
