Supported Applications
The Dwyer Series CRF2 is a two-wire capacitive level transmitter designed to measure the level of liquids, powders, and bulk materials. It utilizes impulse RF admittance measurement technology to sense capacitance changes between the probe and the tank wall or an external ground reference. The series supports applications in pulp and paper, chemical processing, food and beverage, aggregates, plastics, and mining industries.
The transmitter is engineered for use with conductive materials such as water (requiring insulated probes) and dry non-conductive materials where the dielectric constant exceeds 1.2. For corrosive media configurations, an FEP-covered probe option is available.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Series CRF2 operates within a specified ambient temperature range of -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C) and a process temperature limit of -40 to 250°F (-40 to 121°C). The device is rated for pressures up to 100 psi (6.9 bar).
Performance specifications include an accuracy of ±0.5 pF or ±0.25% of span, whichever is greater, and a repeatability of ±0.25 pF or ±0.1% of span, whichever is greater. The measurement range covers 0 to 2000 pF with a sensitivity of 0.15 pF and a minimum span requirement of 8 pF. Response time is documented as 0.5 seconds.
Power requirements are specified as 12 to 35 VDC, with the transmitter requiring a minimum of 10 Volts DC at its connection for proper operation. The unit features spark and static protection via 10 M Ohm dissipation resistance with a spark gap, handling surge currents up to 100 A max.
Configuration Options
The Series CRF2 offers extensive configuration options across enclosure types, probe styles, process connections, and grounding methods. The series supports the following capabilities:
- Enclosure Options: Weatherproof (code W) or Remote mount weatherproof housing (code R), both rated NEMA 4X (IP66).
- Probe Types: Rod type with insertion lengths from 24" to 144", and Cable type with insertion lengths from 24" to 360". Custom lengths are available.
- Process Connections: Includes 3/4", 1", or 1-1/2" NPT male; 1" or 1-1/2" BSPT; 1", 1-1/2", or 2" sanitary clamp; and flange options in 2", 3", or 4" sizes (150# rating) available in 316 SS or PVC.
- Grounding Configurations: Options include no ground included, attached ground rod (for specific flange types), or unattached grounding rod. An M20 conduit connection with cable gland is offered as an option.
- Output Signals: Two-wire 4 to 20 mA or 20 to 4 mA output.
The standard wetted materials consist of FEP for the rod/cable and 316 SS for connections. Ground option configurations utilize 316 SS for rods, cables, and connections with PVC cable spacers. Flange options match the material of the selected flange.
Key Product Differences
The Series CRF2 distinguishes between rigid rod probes and flexible cable probes to accommodate different tank geometries and installation requirements. The model number structure defines specific configurations, such as CRF2-WR01T-048-M20, where the enclosure code (W or R), probe type (Rod or Cable), ground option, process connection size/type, and insertion length are explicitly defined.
Variations in grounding capability depend on tank conductivity; non-metallic tanks require a provided reference electrode connected to the case ground. The series supports both direct mounting via weatherproof enclosures and remote mounting configurations where the housing is separated from the probe by coaxial cable, allowing for flexible installation positioning while maintaining NEMA 4X (IP66) protection.
