Supported Applications

The OS37-38-Series IRt/c infrared thermocouples provide non-contact surface temperature measurement using infrared radiation, making them suited to targets that are moving, rotating, electrically live, hazardous to reach, or otherwise unsuitable for contact probes. Because each sensor delivers a thermocouple-compatible signal, it integrates directly with existing thermocouple instrumentation, controllers, and data loggers without a separate transmitter.

The series spans two optical families for different target surfaces. OS37 high-emissivity models are intended for non-metallic and oxidized surfaces, while OS38 low-emissivity models target shiny metals and other reflective materials. Between the wide-angle CF models, the narrow 1° 60CF models, and the ratio optics, the range covers close-up surface work and distant hot targets, with measurements reaching 2500°C (4500°F) on high-emissivity models and 2760°C (5000°F) on the highest-range low-emissivity models.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Each model carries a 2% accuracy band that can be set anywhere within its overall temperature range. The sensors are self-powered and temperature compensated, and they output a thermocouple signal in Type J, K, E, R, or S depending on the model selected.

  • Ambient operating temperature: -18 to 85°C (0 to 185°F).
  • Housing and mounting: aluminum body 35 mm (1.375 in) in diameter, with overall lengths from 58.4 mm (2.3 in) on the compact CF bodies to 213 mm (8.375 in) on the 60CF bodies; weights range from 184 g (6.5 oz) to 570 g (20 oz).
  • Spectral response: 2 to 20 microns on OS37 high-emissivity CF models and 0.1 to 5 microns on OS38 low-emissivity CF models.
  • Approvals: CE and RoHS.

Within the broader IRt/c family, the enclosure is rated NEMA 4X and IP65, with a pressure rating of 100 psi (6.9 bar), a response time of 0.5 seconds (90%), a resolution of 0.1 °C (0.2 °F), and repeatability of ±0.5% of reading.

Configuration Options

The variants differ mainly in field of view, optics, temperature range, and thermocouple output type.

  • OS37-CF / OS38-CF: wide 30° field of view with a built-in air purge. The high-emissivity OS37-CF covers -18 to 1370 °C (0 to 2500 °F); the low-emissivity OS38-CF covers 260 to 1370 °C (500 to 2500 °F).
  • OS37-60CF / OS38-60CF: narrow 1° field of view for distant or small targets. OS37-60CF covers 540 to 2200 °C (1000 to 4000 °F) and OS38-60CF covers 820 to 2500 °C (1500 to 4500 °F).
  • Ratio optics models: OS37 and OS38 are offered with 10:1, 20:1, or 100:1 optics. The 10:1 optics give a 6° field, 20:1 a 3° field, and 100:1 a 0.6° field.
  • Thermocouple output: high-emissivity models accept Type J, K, E, or T selection and low-emissivity models accept Type J or K, while the 100:1 models are supplied as R type only.

Key Product Differences

The model number follows the structure OS37 or OS38, a field-of-view or optics designator, and a thermocouple-type suffix (for example OS37-CF-K or OS38-10-K). Stripped leads are standard; miniature GMP or standard GST low-noise connectors are ordered separately, and the OS36-MB2 mounting bracket is available as an accessory.

  • High-emissivity, wide/narrow FOV: OS37-CF-J, OS37-CF-K, OS37-60CF-R, OS37-60CF-S.
  • Low-emissivity, wide/narrow FOV: OS38-CF-J, OS38-CF-K, OS38-60CF-R, OS38-60CF-S.
  • High-emissivity ratio optics: OS37-10-K, OS38-100-R.
  • Low-emissivity ratio optics: OS38-10-J, OS38-10-K, OS38-20-J.
