Supported Applications

The OS36-01 Series is a low-cost infrared thermocouple that measures surface temperature without contact, making it well suited to targets that are moving, rotating, hard to reach, or otherwise unsuitable for a conventional contact probe. Because the sensor is self-powered and generates a standard thermocouple signal, it drops directly into existing thermocouple instrumentation, controllers, and data loggers without any transmitter or external supply.

Typical uses include monitoring the surface temperature of webs, rollers, moving product, and machinery where a non-contact reading eliminates thermal-mass loading and frictional heat errors. The 1:1 (60°) field of view lets the sensor view a target area proportional to its mounting distance, and the threaded head allows it to be mounted through a bulkhead or into a tapped hole close to the process.

  • Non-contact surface temperature measurement using infrared radiation
  • Self-powered operation with no moving parts and temperature compensation
  • Direct connection to J, K, E, or T thermocouple inputs

Operating Conditions & Performance

The OS36-01 Series measures surface temperatures to 290°C (550°F) with a stated accuracy of 2% and a self-powered output that requires no internal or external power. The sensor operates over an ambient range of -18 to 70°C (0 to 160°F) and presents a load resistance of 3 kOhm to the connected instrument.

The housing is high-strength ABS plastic that meets NEMA ratings, and the complete assembly weighs 40 g with cable. Key mechanical dimensions include:

  • Overall length 34.0 mm (1.34 in)
  • Thread clearance diameter 18.4 mm (0.775 in)
  • Threaded section 26.2 mm (1.03 in) with a thread pitch of 4.0 mm (0.16 in)
  • Wrench flats 14.0 mm (0.550 in) and head diameter 12.7 mm (0.499 in) max

The series is CE marked and RoHS compliant, is made in the USA, and carries a 2 year warranty that can be extended to 5 years through the OMEGACARE OCW-3 program.

Configuration Options

Every OS36-01 sensor shares the same ABS-plastic infrared platform; the model number defines two independent choices. The first is the thermocouple output type, which sets the calibration curve seen by the receiving instrument:

  • Type J output signal (OS36-01-J series)
  • Type K output signal (OS36-01-K series)
  • Type T output signal (OS36-01-T series)
  • Type E output signal (OS36-01-E series)

The second choice is the temperature range code, which factory-optimizes the sensor for a specific target band. Available ranges span from 50F, covering -18 to 27°C (0 to 80°F), up to 440F, covering 170 to 250°C (340 to 480°F), with intermediate codes such as 140F at 25 to 80°C (80 to 180°F) and 340F at 145 to 175°C (290 to 350°F).

Stripped leads are standard on every variant. As an option, units can be supplied with an SMPW subminiature connector pair or an OSTW standard-size connector pair, each with write-on windows, by adding the corresponding suffix to the model number.

Key Product Differences

Order codes follow the structure OS36-01-<thermocouple type>-<temperature range code>. Combining the four output types with the nine range codes produces the full lineup, including models such as OS36-01-J-140F, OS36-01-K-140F, OS36-01-T-140F, and OS36-01-E-180F, through to the highest band models OS36-01-J-440F, OS36-01-K-440F, and OS36-01-T-440F.

The base order references are:

  • OS36-01-J — Type J thermocouple output signal
  • OS36-01-K — Type K thermocouple output signal
  • OS36-01-T — Type T thermocouple output signal
  • OS36-01-E — Type E thermocouple output signal

The temperature range code is selected from the range chart: 50F, 80F, 98.6F, 140F, 180F, 240F, 280F, 340F, and 440F. Optional connector suffixes -SMPW and -OSTW may be appended, for example OS36-01-K-140F-OSTW.
