Supported Applications
The Omega HDC00426 Series consists of Hi-Density Cartridge Heaters designed for high-temperature applications. These heaters feature a standard sheath constructed from 321 Stainless Steel (Alloy 321, a Nickel-Chromium Stainless Steel modified with Titanium), Grade 'A' Nickel-Chrome resistance wire, and high-purity Magnesium Oxide (MgO) insulation.
For applications requiring higher operating temperatures up to 760°C (1400°F) or corrosive immersion heating, Incoloy® 800 sheath material is available. The series supports configurations suitable for liquid immersion; however, the heater lead end should not be immersed in liquid as most lead end seals are moisture resistant rather than moisture proof.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The maximum operating temperature for this series is 760°C (1400°F). The maximum recommended sheath temperature for a standard heater is 648°C (1200°F).
- Maximum Watt Density: Ranges from 15.5 to 46.5 watt/cm² (100 to 300 watt/in²) depending on heater size and operating temperature.
- Ambient Temperature Limits for Termination: Up to 250°C (482°F) for standard fiberglass-insulated wires; up to 450°C (842°F) for optional mica-insulated wires.
The maximum operating temperature and life expectancy depend on the selected termination's ambient temperature limits. Wattage tolerance is +10, -15% for 1/8" diameters and Plus 5%, minus 10% for larger sizes (1/4" to 1"). Resistance tolerance follows a similar pattern: +15, -10% for 1/8" and Plus 10%, minus 5% for other nominal diameters.
Configuration Options
The series offers extensive configurability across dimensions, electrical ratings, terminations, and protective options to meet specific installation requirements.
Dimensions and Tolerances
- Nominal Diameters: Available in 1/8" (3.10 mm), 1/4" (6.25 mm), 5/16" (7.82 mm), 3/8" (9.42 mm), 1/2" (12.60 mm), 5/8" (15.77 mm), 3/4" (18.95 mm), and 1" (23.30 mm).
- Length Range: Minimum lengths vary by diameter, starting at 31.8 mm (1.25") for 1/8" heaters up to 44.45 mm (1¾") for 1" heaters. Maximum lengths extend from 305 mm (12") for 1/8" diameters to 1829 mm (72") for larger sizes.
- Tolerances: Diameter tolerance is ±0.051 (±0.002) for most sizes and ±0.076 (±0.003) for 3/4" and 1" heaters. Length tolerances are specified as fixed values or percentages based on sheath length.
Electrical Specifications
- Voltage: Maximum voltage ratings range from 240V for smaller diameters to 480*V for sizes 5/8" and larger. Dual volt options are available for diameters of 1/2" through 1", with specific availability noted as "Yes*" or "No" in the specification table.
- Amperage: Maximum amperage varies by diameter, ranging from 3.0A (1/8") to 23A (5/8" through 1"). Specific termination types (C1C, C1D, C2C, C2D, CS, F, M3, R1B, S1, S2, SA, W and W3) have lower maximum amperage limits.
- Features: 3-Phase power is available for diameters of 5/8" through 1". Dual circuits are offered for sizes from 1/2" to 1", while multiple heat zones (maximum 3) are supported on select larger diameters.
Terminations and Accessories
Standard termination utilizes Type N, 254 mm (10") long nickel conductor lead wires externally connected to 32 mm (1¼") solid conductor terminal pins. Over 40 standard termination styles are available.
- Insulation: Fiberglass insulation is standard (UL approved up to 250°C/482°F); mica-insulated wires (up to 450°C/842°F) are optional.
- Protection Options: PTFE seals, convoluted cables, welded end discs, PTFE insulated lead wires, and SJO cable for contamination protection. Strain relief brackets and springs address excessive flexing of leads.
- Coatings: BNS Anti-Seize Cartridge Heater Coating is available as a 13 oz. aerosol spray can (Part Number: CML00010) or 4 oz. paste with brush applicator top (Part Number: CML00020). Do not apply this coating over lead wires or bare current carrying conductors.
- High Temperature Wiring: High temperature wiring harnesses are available up to 760°C/1400°F.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes itself through specific electrical feature availability based on diameter. For example, Dual Volts and Multiple Heat Zones (maximum 3 zones) are marked as "Yes*" for 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 1" diameters but not available or restricted in smaller sizes like 1/8" through 3/8". Similarly, 3-Phase capability is limited to heaters with a nominal diameter of 5/8" or larger.
Material variations include the standard 321 Stainless Steel sheath versus the optional Incoloy® 800 for higher temperature or corrosive environments. Termination styles vary significantly, with specific amperage limits applying to types C1C, C1D, C2C, C2D, CS, F, M3, R1B, S1, S2, SA, W and W3 compared to standard terminations.
Approvals include UL recognized (UL File Number E65652) and CSA certified (CSA File Number 043099). For applications requiring these agency approvals, specification is required when ordering. The series does not support Dual Volts or Multiple Heat Zones on diameters smaller than 1/2".
