Supported Applications

The Omega BB701 series is a portable, rugged blackbody calibrator designed to test and calibrate infrared pyrometers. It functions as a hot/cold calibration source with a built-in precision PID digital controller. The unit provides a stable, repeatable cold calibration point, enabling users to perform quick and accurate tests without preparing an ice bath.

Standard RS232 computer interface support allows for setpoint control in automatic test applications.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The BB701 series operates with a target plate temperature range of -18 to 149°C (0 to 300°F). The cavity emissivity is specified at 0.95, and the target plate size measures 63.5 mm (2.5").

Performance specifications include:

  • Accuracy: ±0.8°C ±1 digit (±1.4°F) worst case.
  • Display Accuracy: ±0.3°C (±0.6°F) over the entire scale.
  • RTD Accuracy: ±0.375°C (±0.75°F) worst case.
  • Stability: ±0.6°C (±1.2°F) or less.

Ambient environmental conditions require temperatures between 4.4 to 29.4°C (40 to 85°F) for the target plate to reach 0°F, and 4.4 to 43°C (40 to 110°F) for the target plate to reach 11.8°F. Humidity must remain between 0 to 90% RH, non-condensing.

Warm-up time is 5 minutes from ambient to 149°C (300°F), and cool-down time is 5 minutes from ambient to -18°C (0°F).

Configuration Options

The series offers two primary power configurations:

  • BB701: 115 Vac~, 50/60 Hz, 175 W.
  • BB701-230VAC: 230 Vac~, 50/60 Hz, 175 W.

The unit includes a built-in RTD reference probe output and an RS232 standard interface. Internal control sensors and calibration reference sensors are Platinum RTDs (100 Ω, 0.00385). Each unit ships with a NIST-Traceable Calibration Certificate including 3 data points.

Physical dimensions for the enclosure are 19.5 H x 35.5 W x 36.5 mm L (7.75 x 14.128 x 15.5"). The unit weighs 12.7 kg (28 lb) and carries an Installation Category II rating.

Key Product Differences

The BB701 series distinguishes models by voltage input requirements while maintaining identical temperature ranges, accuracy specifications, and physical dimensions across the line:

  • BB701: Hot/cold blackbody cal source configured for 115V operation.
  • BB701-230VAC: Hot/cold blackbody cal source configured for 230V operation.
